Getting ready for the 2027 filing season? A little organization now can make expat tax filing much easier later.

Start gathering key documents like your prior U.S. tax return, passport information, W-2s and 1099s, foreign income records, foreign tax documents, bank balances for FBAR/Form 8938, housing expenses, travel-day records, and dependent information.

The more complete your records are, the easier it is to identify the credits, exclusions, and reporting requirements that may apply.

Moving abroad doesn’t automatically end your U.S. tax filing obligations.

U.S. citizens are generally taxed based on citizenship, not where they live. The good news is that many expats can reduce or eliminate U.S. tax through tools like the Foreign Tax Credit or Foreign Earned Income Exclusion when they qualify.

The key is filing correctly.

Not sure whether you’re required to file? Expatriate Tax Returns can help you understand what applies to your situation.

Think you know the basics of expat taxes? A few common assumptions can lead to missed filings or costly mistakes.

Paying tax where you live does not automatically remove your U.S. filing requirement. Foreign accounts can trigger FBAR reporting once the combined balance crosses the threshold. And if you are behind on prior returns, there may still be options to catch up.

The rules are manageable when you know what applies to your situation.

Expatriate Tax Returns can help you sort through the details and file with confidence.

The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion is increasing again for 2026.

Qualifying Americans abroad may be able to exclude up to **$132,900 per person** in foreign earned income. If both spouses qualify and work abroad, the combined exclusion may reach **$265,800**.

But the FEIE is not automatic. You generally need to meet the applicable foreign residence or physical presence requirements and claim the exclusion on **Form 2555**.

The 2026 general foreign housing expense limit is also **$39,870**, although higher limits may apply in certain high-cost locations.

Not sure whether FEIE or the Foreign Tax Credit makes more sense for your situation? Expatriate Tax Returns can help you review your options and file with confidence.

Moving abroad does not always end your state tax obligations. Some states may continue to treat former residents as taxpayers until they can clearly show that residency and domicile ties were actually broken.
Things like keeping a home, driver’s license, voter registration, bank relationships, or other connections can all matter depending on the state.
If you moved overseas, it is worth reviewing whether your former state could still expect a return.
Expatriate Tax Returns can help you understand both federal and state filing requirements while living abroad.
