Sydney, a senior accounting major at The University of Alabama, earned first place in the SEC Startup Competition, winning $10,000 to support the growth of her nonprofit, Beyond Barriers Swim Foundation, which provides adaptive swim lessons for children with chronic illnesses or disabilities.

A recent court decision may open refund opportunities for penalties and interest tied to COVID-era filing delays, but the deadline to act is July 10, 2026.

Following Kwong v. United States, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims extended federal tax deadlines across the full COVID-19 federal disaster period (January 20, 2020 – July 10, 2023). Taxpayers who incurred failure-to-file penalties, failure-to-pay penalties, or related underpayment interest during that period may be eligible for a refund or abatement.

Refunds are not automatic - filing a protective refund claim (Form 843) before July 10, 2026 is the critical next step to preserve eligibility.
