📋 Big changes are coming to how leave works in New Zealand — but there’s no need to panic just yet.

The new Employment Leave Act 2026 (which replaces the old Holidays Act) is now law. The headline change: annual and sick leave will accrue in hours from an employee’s very first day, rather than kicking in after a qualifying period.

A few of the key shifts:
✔️ Annual & sick leave accrue from day one, in hours
✔️ A new 12.5% leave payment for casual/additional hours
✔️ More flexibility to cash up annual leave (up to 25% of the balance)

The important bit: none of this takes effect until 6 August 2028. So nothing changes right now — but it’s a solid two-year runway to get your payroll, employment agreements and leave policies ready.

💸 There’s over $600 million sitting at the IRD — and some of it might be yours.

Inland Revenue is holding around $619 million in unclaimed money. This isn’t tax refunds — it’s money that genuinely belongs to someone, but the owner can’t be found: an old bank account you forgot about, unpaid wages from years back, a dividend that never reached you, proceeds from an old insurance policy.

The catch? Once it’s with IRD, you’ve got 20 years to claim it — after that, it’s gone to the Crown for good. ⏳
