The only constant is change, and this year comes with a significant change to the process of preparing the budget review and draft tax bills. The call for comments on Annexure C proposals for the 2027 Budget Review has been released months before what we are accustomed to.

Should you have any changes you'd like to see, pop us an email at [email protected] and we will consider your proposal for inclusion in SAICA's submission. The timing is a little tight and comments should reach us by Friday, 18 September 2026.

SAICA members have advised that some taxpayers are receiving this SMS in respect of returns that have already been filed. This has been escalated to SARS and we await feedback, following SARS' investigation.

In all honesty, there are few things as versatile as the September edition of the Integritax journal. Pack your laptop, phone or tablet into a waterproof bag and take it along to the ocean, lake, dam or pool. If you're still 'serving time' behind your desk, it's still available to you as a usual 'stress reliever'. It basically matches any spring inspired outfit or activity you may wish to pair it with.

Taxation - a profession where the words (letter of the law) are equally as important as the numbers (tax computations), because 'simple' words like and/or can change the playing field drastically.

SA tax clinics - an attempt to make taxation more digestible and understandable for the man on the street, while also giving those eager young minds wishing to join the tax profession invaluable on the ground experience.

If this isn't a worthwhile attempt at trying to ensure the tax profession is sustainable, I don't know what is....and it's for this (and other reasons) that we as SAICA chose to roll up our sleeves and get involved.

Indulge me and my emotions for a second as this post holds a very personal place in my heart and I wish to stay true to the impact yesterday had on me.

Watching these young eager minds engage in a simulation exercise as they prepare themselves as best they can for the adventure that lies ahead - the excitement (mixed with a dash of nervousness and trepidation over the unknown), desire for excellence and most importantly willingness to serve their county as best they can filled the room in a purely intoxicating manner.

A massive thanks to all the lecturers, tax practitioners and tax faculty students involved in this pilot initiative. As you set sail into uncharteted waters, we wish you all the best navigating whatever the sea may throw your way. We also look forward to helping you use your learnings to make this journey as successful as possible.

So hoist the mainsail, me hearties and set a course for discovery.

SAICA members have reported challenges with respect to processing requests for correction in respect of first provisional tax returns that are due by next Monday. Following engagement, SARS is working on a resolution. It is important to keep a record of the challenges experienced - screenshots included!

Tarryn Atkinson CA(SA) Attorney - Tarryn Atkinson CA(SA) is both a Chartered Accountant and qualified attorney, leading Employees’ Tax and Benefits at one of the major banks. She brings deep expertise in employees’ tax, expatriate tax, share schemes, and tax administration, with leadership roles across CFO Forum, BASA, and ASISA committees. Tarryn has a strong consulting background from one of the big 4 audit firms and continues to shape tax practice through her committee work and professional contributions.

Dr Muneer Hassan - Dr Hassan a Deputy Head of Accountancy and Senior Lecturer in Taxation and a CA(SA) with a PhD in Taxation. He has held senior roles at one of the big 4 audit firms, SARS, and SAICA, and serves on multiple national tax committees. Muneer is deeply engaged in advancing tax education, governance, and policy, with a passion for ensuring fairness and effectiveness in the tax system.

Michael Graskie - Michael Graskie is a CA(SA) who brings 34 years of expertise across insurance, auditing, public sector oversight, and taxation. He has held senior roles at the Auditor‑General and SARS, where he contributed significantly to trust tax administration and legislation. Now a senior specialist at a consulting firm, Michael focuses on trust compliance, consultation, and serving as an independent trustee.

Jabu Masondo - Jabu Masondo, CA(SA) is a Partner at one of the big 4 audit firms and a seasoned tax professional with more than 20 years’ experience. He has worked extensively across income tax in the financial services sector, investment holding structures, private companies, and operating businesses. Jabu is recognised for his ability to deliver practical tax solutions and guide clients through complex compliance and advisory challenges.

Coen Stokes - Coen Stokes, CA(SA) is SAICA’s National Council President and a Registered Auditor with expertise in assurance, taxation, and litigation. He was recognised as one of SAICA’s Top 35 CAs under 35 in 2017 and has advised widely across diverse entities. Coen has held multiple leadership roles within SAICA, including Chairman of the National SMP Committee and Northern Region Council President.
