Side income should not be dealt with for the first time when the ITR12 is prepared.
In “Underreported Side Income and What Practitioners Miss Before the ITR12”, Roxanna Naidoo examines what happens when consulting fees, freelance work or online income are excluded from provisional tax estimates.
The absence of a tax certificate does not make the income non-taxable. Declaring only the amount transferred by an online platform may also be incorrect where commissions or conversion charges were deducted before settlement.
Practitioners should ask direct questions about additional income, classify material deposits and retain supporting records while the transactions are still recent.

The Dress HER in Dignity mannequin has found its place at Parktown High School for Girls.
Created from handwritten and online messages of affirmation, encouragement and hope, the dress represents women who have been diminished by criticism, exclusion and labels imposed by others.
The learners did more than contribute to an artwork. They considered how their words can help another woman feel heard and recognise her own worth.
We thank Parktown High School for Girls for taking part in this campaign and the Rosebank Killarney Gazette for sharing the story with the wider community.

Working abroad does not automatically mean your foreign income is exempt from South African tax.
Your tax residence, where the work was performed and the relevant Double Taxation Agreement can all affect where tax may be due and what relief may apply.
A Double Taxation Agreement sets out how taxing rights are allocated between countries and what relief may apply where the same income is exposed to tax in both jurisdictions.
Latita Africa helps South Africans working abroad understand where tax may be due, what relief may apply and how to avoid paying more tax than legally required.

Can an expensive car prove that a taxpayer has undeclared income?
In “SARS Can See the Car: Can It See the Wealth?”, Jemaine Manikus, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Latita Africa examines how visible spending may trigger a SARS enquiry without necessarily establishing a tax liability.
A property, vehicle or overseas trip tells only part of the story. The funds may have come from finance, accumulated savings, an inheritance, a genuine loan or support from a spouse. What matters is whether the taxpayer can trace the transaction and support the explanation with credible records.
As SARS expands its use of third-party information and data matching, taxpayers with complex financial affairs should document their funding arrangements before an enquiry begins.

Women’s Month has come to an end, but the conversations started through Dress HER in Dignity continue.
Last week, we introduced She Leads, recognising the boss woman who sets clear standards, follows through on her commitments and takes responsibility for the impact of her leadership.
bassey, an entrepreneur, coach and speaker, shares her story of leadership and the responsibility that comes with making decisions that affect others.
Leadership is measured by the responsibility a woman is willing to carry and the accountability she shows for her decisions.
Represented by red, accountability reminds us that leadership is not defined by a title alone. It is demonstrated through honesty, consistency and the willingness to answer for the decisions we make.
