What happens when someone passes away without a valid will?

In simple terms, the law decides who may inherit from their estate.

This is known as intestate succession. It means that instead of having your wishes written down and deciding who should receive your assets, your estate is distributed according to the rules set out in the law.

For example, your family circumstances, such as whether you have a spouse, children or other relatives, can affect who may inherit.

Having a valid will allows you to make your wishes known and provides clear instructions for how you want your estate to be dealt with.
