You can be flat out on five sites and still be losing money on three of them.
The trouble with construction is that you often only find out at handover, when it is far too late to fix. By then the materials are bought, the labour is paid, and the margin you thought was there has quietly disappeared.
The fix is knowing your numbers per job, not just for the whole firm. Job costing, work in progress and retention, tracked as you go, so a job that is slipping shows up while you can still do something about it. Clean, CIDB ready books help you win the next tender too.
You would never build without a plan. Your money deserves one as well.

SARS can only see part of your story. The rest is up to you.
Six things an auto assessment often leaves out:
1. Your home office, if you work from home
2. A retirement annuity, especially from a smaller provider
3. Travel claims based on your actual logbook, not a flat estimate
4. Rental income from a property
5. Foreign income
6. Freelance or side hustle income
Missing a deduction means a smaller refund than you earned. Missing income can mean a SARS query later. Both are worth a careful look before you accept.
Save this and check yours line by line.

A full restaurant on a Friday night feels like a good month. Sometimes it is not.
The number that tells the truth is your prime cost, food plus labour together. For most South African restaurants it should sit around 55% to 65% of sales. A few percent over, week after week, is how a busy kitchen still ends the month with nothing in the bank.
The hard part is that almost no one tracks it weekly. So the bleed stays invisible until it is the whole problem.
You handle the food. The numbers should be just as sharp. If you have never seen your prime cost, that is the place to start.

Waiting to hear from SARS this week? You can stop guessing.
Quick way to know where you stand:
1. Wait for your SMS or email between 1 and 12 July.
2. Or check the SARS Online Query System and look for "My Auto Assessment Status."
3. No word by 12 July means you are not auto assessed, and you file from 13 July.
New this year: your assessment can come through on WhatsApp, eFiling has a fresh look, and there is a medical aid dropdown to cut errors.
A little preparation now is a calmer July. Save this so you have the steps when you need them.

The SARS messages have landed.
From 1 to 12 July, SARS sends out around 6 million auto assessments by SMS and email. If one arrives, take a breath. You do not need to rush to a branch.
But please do not just tap accept. An auto assessment only knows what SARS can see. Your medical aid, your retirement annuity, a home office, a bit of side income. If it is missing, your refund could be smaller than it should be, or a quiet problem could be waiting for later.
Review first. Accept second.
If you were auto assessed, you have until 23rd October to review and correct your returns.

Filing season is officially open from today.
If you did not get an auto assessment, this is your window. Non provisional taxpayers have until 23 October to file.
Make it painless by getting these together now:
• Your IRP5
• Medical aid tax certificate
• Retirement annuity certificate
• Investment income (IT3b)
• Travel logbook, if you claim travel
• Home office records, if you work from home

Here’s a truth that catches out even profitable businesses 👇
Your bank balance is NOT your cash flow.
The balance shows today. It doesn’t show next week’s payroll, that VAT payment, or the client who pays late. That gap is where good businesses get caught.
The fix is a simple cash-flow forecast — so you can see the squeeze coming and plan around it. We show you how on the blog 👇

Be honest — which one are you? 😅
📦 The ‘shoebox in February’ business
📊 The ‘I know my numbers any day’ business
Monthly bookkeeping is the difference. When your books are always up to date, tax season is calm, decisions are smarter, and a SARS query is no big deal.
We explain why it matters on the blog 👇

Quick heads-up for business owners 📢
If you pay provisional tax (with a February year-end), your first payment for the year is due 31 August 2026.
It’s based on an estimate of your income — and getting it wrong costs you, either in SARS penalties or in cash flow you can’t spare.
The fix? Accurate numbers and a realistic estimate, sorted well before the deadline. Plain-language guide on the blog 👇
