As we move further into tax season, please ensure you take note of two key SARS submission cutoffs falling on this date:

Personal Income Tax (ITR12) Submissions
If you are a non-provisional individual taxpayer filing via SARS eFiling or the eFiling app, 23 October 2026 is the final deadline to submit your annual return and remain fully compliant.

Auto-Assessment Corrections & Submissions
If you received a SARS auto-assessment earlier this season and need to declare additional income, claim allowable deductions, or amend the assessment, 23 October 2026 is also the official cutoff to submit your return.

Filing ahead of the deadline ensures your profile remains up to date while avoiding potential rush delays.

The team at The Tax Shop Linden & Parkhurst is here to assist you with accurate submissions and professional tax guidance.

Missing a valid tax invoice when filing your return doesn't mean you've lost out on your VAT refund forever.

Under Section 16(3) of the Value-Added Tax Act, SARS allows registered VAT vendors to claim forgotten or unclaimed Input VAT up to 5 years after the date of the original invoice. If you find a mislaid invoice from 2 or 3 years ago that you never claimed on your VAT201, you can simply include it in your current VAT period’s input tax claim—no need to formally reopen or object to past returns.

Key rules to keep in mind:
✔ You must hold a valid, full Tax Invoice that meets all SARS requirements (showing both parties' VAT numbers if over R5,000).
✔ The invoice must not be older than 5 years from the end of the tax period in which the tax became deductible.
✔ The expense must have been incurred for making taxable supplies in your business.

Don't write off old, unclaimed receipts—check your records to see if your business has unclaimed input tax waiting to be recovered!

Crypto compliance is officially under the SARS spotlight. A common mistake many South Africans make is assuming tax only applies when converting crypto back into Rand. In reality, SARS views crypto as an asset, meaning tax rules kick in the moment a transaction happens—whether you are trading coins, making purchases, or accepting crypto in your business.

Knowing how to declare these transactions correctly is essential to avoiding audits and heavy penalties:

▶ Active trading and short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income (up to 45%), while long-term investments may qualify for Capital Gains Tax (up to 18%).

▶If your business accepts crypto for products or services, SARS treats it as a barter trade. You must declare the Rand value on the day of the sale as gross income.

▶You need clear records of every trade, including the transaction date, original cost, and Rand value at the time.

Unsure if your crypto portfolio or business transactions are fully compliant?

Don't agree with your SARS auto-assessment? Do not accept or ignore it!

If you ignore the notice, it will automatically become your final assessment once the deadline lapses, which could mean missing out on deductions or paying more than you should.

Instead, log into SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp, view the auto-assessment, and click on "Edit Return". This action automatically rejects the SARS simulation and lets you correct the numbers.

Remember, you only have 40 business days from the date the notice was issued to make your changes or until 23 October 2026. Manually correcting an assessment often triggers a routine SARS verification.

If you are unsure about the numbers or the process, it is always best to seek professional help from a registered tax practitioner to keep your tax affairs compliant.
