Are South African investors paying attention to what’s changing beneath the headlines?

For years, the economic narrative has been dominated by the problems.

But there are signs of something else happening:
Private-sector participation is increasing.
Economic fundamentals are improving in some areas.
And businesses are increasingly stepping in where the state has struggled.

According to PSG Financial Services chief economist Johann Els, these developments could have meaningful implications for South Africa’s economic outlook.

This doesn't mean the risks have disappeared.
It means investors need to look beyond the headlines.

Good investing isn't about predicting the future.
It's about being positioned for different possible futures.

That means reviewing:
• Where your money is invested
• Whether you're sufficiently diversified
• Your investment time horizon
• Your exposure to South Africa vs global markets
• Whether your portfolio still aligns with your goals

Because when the economic landscape changes, your investment strategy shouldn't be sitting on autopilot.

South Africa may be changing.
Is your portfolio positioned for change?

Your Will could save your family millions — or unintentionally cost them millions.

Most people think estate planning is simply:
“Do I have a Will?”
But that is only the beginning.

A recent Moneyweb article highlights a powerful — and often misunderstood — estate-planning tool: Section 4(q) of the Estate Duty Act.

When structured correctly, Section 4(q) can provide a deduction for assets passing to a qualifying surviving spouse, potentially reducing estate duty at the first death.

But here’s the catch:
The tax may be deferred, not eliminated.

And the wording of your will and trust can make a massive difference.

The article gives an example where two families with the same assets could face an estate-duty difference of approximately R2.7 million, simply because of how the testamentary trust was structured and how the Section 4(q) requirements were applied.

That should make every married couple stop and ask:
🔹 Does my will actually do what I think it does?
🔹 Have we planned for the second death, not just the first?
🔹 Will my spouse have sufficient liquidity?
🔹 Are my beneficiary nominations aligned with my will?
🔹 Could my trust structure unintentionally create an estate-duty problem?
🔹 Will my family understand what happens when I'm no longer there to explain it?

Estate planning isn't just about saving tax.
It's about making sure your wealth reaches the people you intended, in the way you intended, with as little unnecessary complexity and financial disruption as possible.

Your will is not just a legal document.
It is part of your financial plan.
And if your will, investments, trusts, beneficiary nominations, liquidity and family intentions aren't working together, you may have an estate plan on paper — but not necessarily a plan that works.

📌 If you haven't reviewed your estate plan recently, this is one conversation worth having before your family is forced to have it without you.

Section 4(q) can be one of the most powerful estate-planning tools available to South African couples. But the real question is not simply how much tax you can save. It is whether the people you love will receive what you intended, in the way you intended.

What if your biggest retirement fear has less to do with money?

We spend so much time talking about retirement savings, investment returns, sustainable income and tax planning.
And yes — those things matter.

But there is another side to retirement planning that we don't talk about enough.
What happens when the money is no longer the biggest problem?

What if your real concern is:
→ Losing your independence
→ Becoming dependent on your children
→ Having to move out of your home
→ What happens if your spouse needs care
→ Losing your sense of purpose and identity
→ Becoming socially isolated
→ Not being able to afford the lifestyle you envisioned
→ Leaving a legacy that creates family conflict
→ Or even having to give up the companionship of a beloved pet

These aren't numbers on a retirement projection.
But they are part of your retirement plan.

A retirement plan should answer more than:
"Will my money last?"

It should also ask:
"What do I want my life to look like when I stop working?"

Because retirement isn't simply the point where your salary stops.
It is the beginning of a new financial and personal chapter — and the best planning starts by understanding what you are actually trying to protect.

Your independence.
Your lifestyle.
Your relationships.
Your choices.
Your dignity.
Your legacy.

The numbers are important.
But the life behind the numbers is what we're really planning for.

If you're approaching retirement, don't wait until you have to make these decisions under pressure.

Start the conversation while you still have choices.

📌 An insightful article by Craig Torr on Moneyweb.

Retirement is about more than annuities, asset allocation and sustainable income: advisors also need to understand the fears about ageing, dependence, loss, and identity that sit behind the numbers.

Women's Month Series: Week 4

"One Day Your Paycheque Will Stop. Your Bills Won't."

It's a sentence nobody likes to think about.
But it's true.

Whether retirement comes by choice or unexpectedly, your expenses don't retire with you.

The women who enjoy financial freedom later in life usually didn't get lucky.

They made consistent, intentional financial decisions over many years.
Every investment.
Every review.
Every contribution.

Small decisions today become financial confidence tomorrow.

Women's Month Series: Week 3

"Being the Family's Financial Emergency Plan Is Exhausting."

Women are often the planners.
The caregivers.
The problem-solvers.
The ones everyone calls when life goes wrong.
But who's making sure you're financially secure?

Financial planning isn't selfish.
It's responsible.
Having savings.
Having investments.
Having the right protection.
Having a plan.
These aren't luxuries.
They're the foundation that allows you to keep supporting the people you love—without sacrificing your own future.

Strong women deserve strong financial plans.

Women's Month Series: Week 2

"Your Handbag Is Insured... But Is Your Income?"

Most women insure the things they own.
Very few insure the income that pays for everything.

If illness or an accident stopped you from earning tomorrow...
Who would pay the bond? The school fees? The groceries? The medical aid?

Your greatest financial asset isn't your car.
It isn't your house.
It's your ability to earn an income.

Protecting that income could be one of the smartest financial decisions you'll ever make.

Don't wait until life forces the conversation.
Have it while you still have choices.

Women's Month Series: Week 1

"Love Won't Pay Your Retirement... And Neither Will Hope."

For generations, many women have put everyone else's future before their own...

The children. The spouse. The household. The family.

Then one day, retirement arrives... and there isn't enough.

The reality is that women often live longer than men, are more likely to take career breaks, and can earn less over their lifetime.

That makes retirement planning even more important.
Your retirement plan should never depend on someone else's income or promises.

It should depend on your own financial strategy.

This Women's Month, give yourself permission to put your future on the priority list.
Your future self will thank you.

Question: If you stopped working tomorrow, would your retirement plan still be on track?

🚨 Before you click "Accept" on your SARS Auto-Assessment... read this first.

An auto-assessment can save time—but it isn't always the full picture.

Here are 5 things you should check before accepting it:

✅ 1. Doing nothing means you agree.
If you don't respond, SARS assumes you accept the assessment.
If it's accurate, great. If not, you could end up paying more tax than necessary.

💰 2. Has all of your income been declared?
SARS relies on information received from third parties.
It may not include:
• Freelance or consulting income
• Side-hustle earnings
• Rental income
• Foreign income
• Self-employment income

📑 3. Are you claiming every deduction you're entitled to?
Don't leave money on the table.
Check whether applicable deductions have been included, such as:
• Retirement annuity contributions
• Section 18A donations
• Qualifying medical expenses
• Home office expenses
• Travel claims

📋 4. Check that third-party information is correct.
If your IRP5, medical aid certificate or retirement fund certificate contains errors, you'll usually need the employer, medical scheme or fund to correct and resubmit the information to SARS.

⚠️ 5. Is your tax situation more complex this year?
Take extra care if you:
• Made a Two-Pot retirement withdrawal
• Received more than one IRP5
• Earned interest above the exemption
• Sold investments
• Received foreign dividends
• Earned rental income

A few minutes spent reviewing your assessment today could save you thousands of rands.

If you're unsure whether your SARS auto-assessment is correct, speak to a qualified tax practitioner or financial adviser before accepting it.

The Power of Starting Early

At 28, Jason started his career earning R32,000 per month.

He didn’t have a big salary yet.
But he made one important decision.

He started......
Jason did three simple things:
• Invested R2,500 per month into a retirement annuity
• Increased the amount every time his salary increased
• Protected his income with disability and income protection cover
Nothing dramatic , Just consistent decisions.

Fast forward 25 years.
Jason is 53 with:
• Over R6 million in retirement savings
• A bond that’s nearly paid off
• The option to slow down his career without financial stress !

His advantage wasn’t earning more than everyone else.
It was time and consistency.

Your future financial freedom often starts with one small decision today.

SARS Isn’t Your Business Partner!

Ever asked,
“Can’t we structure this better?”
And the answer is just…
“It is what it is.”

Here’s the truth:
Paying tax is mandatory.
Overpaying because there’s no strategy.... Optional.

There’s a difference between compliance and tax planning.

One reports the numbers.
The other structures them properly.

If you’re not proactively reviewing your tax position,
you might be funding inefficiency — not growth.

SARS collects.
Strategy protects.
