𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐨’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲

Jaco was a pl***oy.

I met him before I entered the financial industry. He was one of those men who seemed larger than life. The kind of man people noticed the moment he walked into a room. He carried an energy that drew others in. There was always a girl by his side, and he lived like consequences belonged to someone else.

When I joined Liberty, Jaco became one of my first clients. We put a policy in place, but it did not last. It lapsed after a few months. Some time later, we tried again, and that one lapsed too.

He was not the kind of client an advisor would call ideal.

But I knew he needed cover.

Then everything changed.

Jaco found out he was going to be a father.

That was the moment the penny dropped. Life was no longer only about him. Suddenly there was someone coming into this world who would need him, depend on him, and look to him. For the first time, responsibility became real.

Our third attempt at putting cover in place stuck.

And so did he.

Jaco became a devoted father. The man who had once lived carelessly now rushed home to bathe his little girl. The love he poured into Natalie was tender, deep, and beautiful to witness. It changed him. He had found something worth living for beyond himself.

He married Natalie’s mother, and for a while it looked as though life had settled. A little family. A new rhythm. A better man.

But sometimes old habits do not leave quietly.

One late night, after drinking, everything came undone. A truck with no lights. A violent moment. An abrupt end.

Jaco died on impact.

I was listed as an emergency contact, and I got the call. I was there in the middle of the heartbreak, standing close enough to feel the weight of what had been lost.

It was a devastating time for the family.

But this is where the story changes.

Because somewhere between the reckless young man and the loving father, Jaco had done one very important thing right. He had taken responsibility. He had put cover in place. And when he was no longer there to provide, protect, or guide, that decision still stood.

The life policy paid out.

Natalie and her mother were able to carry on living the life Jaco had started building for them. Their grief was no less. Their loss was no smaller. But their future was not destroyed as well.

That is the power of one responsible decision.

Sometimes love is not only shown in what we feel.
Sometimes love is proven in what we put in place.

Jaco could not stay.
But because he planned, part of him still did
