The recent news about three well-known colleges closing down shows just how common "fly-by-night" institutions and unaccredited courses have become. If a college claims to have international accreditation or charges exceptionally high fees, please do your homework. Verify their credentials before you commit to anything.

South Africa’s latest tax statistics paint a clear, and uncomfortable, picture.

Nearly R2 trillion was collected in the past year, but the bulk of this revenue does not come from businesses. It comes from individuals. More specifically, from a very small group of people. The typical heavy lifter in our tax system remains a man over 35, based in Johannesburg, with Gauteng alone contributing close to half of all personal income tax collected.

What stands out most is how narrow the tax base has become. Of more than 26 million registered taxpayers, only around nine million are actively paying tax. Even more striking, just over 1% of taxpayers are responsible for roughly 30% of total tax revenue.

While higher collections are being celebrated, driven by stronger enforcement and measures like the two-pot retirement withdrawals, this raises a serious question. How sustainable is a system that relies so heavily on such a small segment of the population?

At some point, the pressure becomes unsustainable. And when that happens, the economic consequences will be felt far beyond the tax system.
