Foreigners flee SA stocks, sending volumes on JSE tumbling
Foreign investors have accelerated their (net) selling of equities on the JSE, with sales 40% greater thus far in 2023 than in the same period in 2022. To last Friday, non-SA investors sold a net R103 billion of equities, versus R73 billion in the first 40 weeks of last year.
Year to date, the JSE All Share Index (Alsi) is down 1.1%. (The flows picture for bonds, while still barely positive for the year, is down 70% versus 2022.)

EXPLAINER | What is capital gains tax?
Capital gains tax (CGT) can make you liable for tax on a portion of the capital gain you make on the disposal of property, businesses, certain investments and other assets in any tax year.
CGT is not a separate tax. The taxable part of your gain is added to your taxable income and income tax is paid on it.

SARS knows everything about your bank account
A recent High Court case has shown just how much information the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has on taxpayers.
In CSARS v M, the revenue service won big in a case where the taxman challenged a taxpayer on what was on their tax return and bank account did not match.
Tax Consulting SA said that this case is a hallmark example of how SARS knows everything about your bank account and how to use the information against taxpayers.

South Africa playing Russian roulette – threatening the worst economic crisis in its history
South Africa risks becoming bankrupt for its relationship with Russia, which adds virtually nothing to the economy, state revenues, economic growth, job creation, socioeconomic stability, and investor sentiment.
This is according to Investec chief Annabel Bishop, who commented on the dire consequences of entertaining relations with Russia – a country that has continued to push war with Ukraine.
Concerns arose when the United States of America (USA) formally indicated that South Africa was in danger of being ousted from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), losing its trade benefits due to its love of Russia.
In a letter to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the beginning of June, US legislators said that there are “serious concerns with current plans to host this year’s AGOA Forum in South Africa” and that “actions by South Africa call into question its eligibility for trade benefits under AGOA”.

Heystek: SA’s slow decline hits “suddenly”; ANC leadership guarantees more calamity
Independent financial analyst Magnus Heystek reflects on South Africa’s deteriorating economic situation, drawing parallels with Ernest Hemingway’s famous quote on financial calamity, suggesting that after years of “Slowly” the country has hit the point of “Suddenly”. Heystek highlights various indicators of the country’s decline, including low GDP growth, credit rating downgrades, currency depreciation, property market collapse, rising interest rates, and poor pension fund performance. He criticizes optimistic economic forecasts and calls for individuals to protect their wealth by investing offshore and divesting from local assets.

How much money you would have if you invested R1,000 in the JSE Top 40, S&P 500, and Nasdaq 100
Challenging South African economic conditions and the weak rand have helped the Satrix Nasdaq 100 and Satrix S&P 500 to significantly outperform the Satrix JSE Top 40.
South Africa has had a tough start to the year. Intensified load-shedding, interest rate hikes, being greylisted, and political tensions have hammered the local economy.
The rand has also weakened to its lowest level ever after the US Ambassador to South Africa claimed the country sold arms to Russia.

Big interest rate changes coming
Faced with sticky inflation but sluggish economic growth, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is considering changing its interest rate modelling tool.
This is according to Genera Capital investment specialist Professor Adrian Saville who spoke to The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield.
Saville said there is a considerable debate around the appropriateness of inflation targeting, i.e. using interest rate cuts and hikes to control inflation.

How to de-risk your investment portfolio
It is an inescapable truth that offshore indices such as the S&P 500 trumped the JSE All Share index over the last decade, vindicating those who campaigned for a heavier offshore weighting.
The US dollar has appreciated 176% against the rand since 2000, which further explained the logic of moving funds offshore to protect against this relative withering of the rand (notwithstanding the recent strengthening of the rand).
