The 2026 Budget is out, and here’s my simple take as a financial adviser.

No fireworks. No plot twists. Just a few important shifts that will quietly affect your wallet.

What it means for you:

• Slight tax relief
Tax brackets were adjusted, so many people will take home a bit more. Before you upgrade the car or add another streaming subscription, consider increasing your retirement contribution or your Tax Free Savings Account. Future you will say thank you.

• Small businesses get relief
The higher VAT threshold gives entrepreneurs more breathing room. If you run a business, this is a good time to review your structure and make sure your risk cover is solid. Growth is great. Unprotected growth is stressful.

• Fuel and sin taxes are up
Petrol, alcohol and to***co are going to cost more. So yes, your tank and your weekend braai might both feel it. Even if you don’t smoke or drink, transport costs filter into everything else.

• Big infrastructure spend
Government is pushing infrastructure investment, which could support local growth. That’s positive, but your portfolio still needs proper diversification. Hope is not an investment strategy.

The Budget wasn’t dramatic. But small changes, handled correctly, can make a big difference over time.
