Jeremy Pugliese, Financial Advisor

Jeremy Pugliese, Financial Advisor Helping Business Owners Navigate Challenges and Opportunities | Business Founder | Community Volunteer I joined the firm in 2015.

I am a Financial Advisor with Planning Alliance, where I assist business owners in designing and implementing optimal financial plans. My areas of experience include business continuity planning, partnership negotiations, business exit planning, and employee retention plans. My team and I are dedicated to ensuring our clients experience the highest level of service, built on a foundation of integrity, security, and follow-through. I started my first business at 19 while managing and operating my family’s plumbing supply company. During that time, I learned first-hand the trials and tribulations that business owners face every day. Before pivoting to a career in finance, I founded and sold four additional companies. As an industry thought leader, I have published articles on business planning and income protection. I have appeared on the Why We Plan podcast to discuss exit planning approaches, and I have been a BEI conference speaker on exit planning. I hold the following designations: Wealth Management Certified Professional (WMCP®) and Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®) from The American College of Financial Services, as well as Certified Exit Planner (CExP®) from the Business Enterprise Institute (BEI). Outside of work, my wife Ginny and I enjoy hiking and are active volunteers with the R.Y.A.N. Foundation, a non-profit based in our hometown that develops youth programs to create awareness about the disease of addiction.

Here's a question I ask every business owner: What will you walk away from the business with?

Not what it is worth on paper. What lands in your bank account after the M&A fees, attorney costs, and taxes.

That gap between expectation and reality is one of the biggest surprises I see. Good tax planning helps, but it can't erase all of it.

Most owners open a business to eventually gain financial freedom, so plan the exit from the start. Get a valuation, run the after-tax numbers with your CPA, and build a plan around what you'll keep.

The earlier you start, the more options you have.

Ask a contractor which job made them the most money last year, and most can’t tell you.

They're good at what they do. They've built the business on experience and instinct, and the work keeps coming in. But without job costing and proper WIP reporting, they’re guessing at profit.

It shows up in the same ways: revenue is up but cash is tight, and a job that felt great turned out to barely break even.

If you only do one thing this year and in the years to come, get a real handle on your numbers. Know your profit by job and by division. Know where you stand on every project before the cash crunch tells you.

What’s one number you wish you had a better handle on in your business?

Selling a business is rarely just a business decision. In the case of a client of mine, there were other considerations like his holdings, estate, and family. I believed that having one coordinated plan across all areas could make for a stronger exit. I also felt developing that plan would be a challenge.

This case study breaks down the strategy and how we got him to close from a stronger position.

Your business is one of your biggest assets. Does your succession plan protect it?

Here’s a question for co-owners of a business: If your partner passed away tomorrow, would you have the liquidity to buy out their share today?

If you answered “no”, you’re hardly alone. So, let's bring a life insurance funded buy-sell agreement into the conversation.

This is an agreement where the surviving owner, owners, or the business itself, buys the deceased owner's share at a price set in advance. When it's funded with life insurance, the cash is there the moment it's needed protecting the business from a forced fire sale or a scramble to raise capital to stay afloat.

That said, there’s an important caveat to this strategy if you have a buy-sell agreement in place. The Supreme Court's 2024 ruling in Connelly v. United States changed how those life insurance proceeds get treated for estate tax purposes. That’s why it's worth reviewing your agreement with that in mind.

Friday FYI: While the death benefit remains the primary purpose of life insurance, cash value accruals within a permanent life insurance can act as a strategic buffer against market volatility inside a broader financial and business plan.

We've received some great submissions for the Senior Client Service Associate (Investments) position. Thanks to those who have already applied.

I've had several people reach out with questions about the nature of the role so here's a high level summary:

This role starts on-site for training, then transitions to a hybrid schedule once you're up to speed. You'll be working directly with high-net-worth clients, managing everything from asset rollovers to Required Distributions and ROTH conversions.

A few things that are non-negotiable: you must hold your NJ/NY Life and Health, FINRA SIE, Series 7, and Series 66 licenses, plus have 4+ years of experience supporting Principal Advisors. If that's you (or someone you know), let's have a conversation.

- Salary starting at $95,000/year + bonuses, with a strong benefits package (401k match, health/dental, PTO, and more)
- Rockaway, NJ (training also at our Woodcliff Lake office)
- Hybrid will be considered

If you're licensed, experienced, and ready for a firm that invests in your growth as much as our clients' futures, DM me or apply via the link below:
