I agree with this post! And I think it’s best to keep an email trail. I ask my clients to respond in RED type, in the original email of questions. This keeps the conversation organized and easily referenced when the books need to be updated. I then respond in BLUE type to any of their responses that need clarifying or answered back. It works perfectly & quickly for both client & bookkeeper.

💬 Why Your Bookkeeper Should Ask a Lot of Questions
If your bookkeeper asks you a ton of questions, take it as a very good sign. Great bookkeeping isn’t just data entry — it’s detective work, pattern recognition, and making sure every financial detail is accurate and meaningful. Here’s why curiosity is one of a bookkeeper’s most important skills:
🔍 1. Accuracy Depends on Clarification
Transactions don’t always explain themselves.
Is that “Amazon charge” office supplies, equipment, or personal?
Is that transfer income, a loan, or owner’s equity?
Asking questions ensures the books reflect reality — not assumptions.
🧮 2. Tax Time Will Thank You
The more a bookkeeper understands now, the fewer surprises later. Proper categorization and documentation reduce headaches, prevent missed deductions, and keep you prepared for your accountant (and the IRS).
💡 3. Understanding Your Business = Better Books
Every business operates differently. A curious bookkeeper learns your processes, your cash flow patterns, and your goals — which means cleaner books and more useful financial reports.
⚠️ 4. Questions Catch Problems Early
Unusual charges, missing receipts, inconsistent income, or duplicate entries stand out more when your bookkeeper knows what “normal” looks like. Questions act as early-warning systems.
🤝 5. Good Communication Creates a Strong Partnership
Bookkeepers aren’t just number-crunchers — they’re part of your financial support team. Questions open the door to conversations that can improve how your business handles money.
💬 In short:
If your bookkeeper is asking questions, it isn’t a nuisance — it’s a sign of thoroughness, professionalism, and commitment to your financial clarity.
A silent bookkeeper is easy.
A curious bookkeeper is invaluable.
