One thing I hear all the time:

“I have life insurance through work.”

That's great. Seriously.

But do you know how much you have?

Do you know whether you can take it with you if you leave?

Do you know what happens if you change jobs?

And most importantly... is it actually enough for the people who depend on you?

Having coverage and knowing what you have are two very different things.

Take 10 minutes and look at your benefits.

You might be perfectly covered.

Or you might find a conversation worth having.

How many old retirement accounts do you have floating around?

Seriously.

One from a job 10 years ago.

Another from the company you worked for before that.

Maybe one you haven't looked at in years.

I have conversations with people all the time who aren't even completely sure where everything is anymore.

Changing jobs is part of life.

Forgetting about what you left behind doesn't have to be.

Sometimes the first step is simply making a list of what you have and where it is.

Everyone talks about protecting their house, their car and their phone.

But what's paying for all of it?

Your income.

For most families, the ability to earn an income is one of the biggest things keeping everything moving.

Mortgage.

Food.

Vacations.

Sports.

School.

Retirement savings.

Everyday life.

It's interesting how much time we spend insuring the things we own without thinking about what makes owning all of those things possible in the first place.

Worth thinking about.

Warren Buffett, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Shaquille O’Neal have all shared their thoughts on inheritance—and their approaches may surprise you.

This Kiplinger article looks at how several well-known people think about passing wealth to the next generation, and raises an interesting question: What do you want the wealth you’ve built to do for the people you care about?

“I'll take care of it later.”

I've said it.

You've probably said it.

We all say it.

The problem is that some things are really easy to keep pushing down the road.

Reviewing your life insurance.

Looking at an old retirement account.

Updating beneficiaries.

Actually sitting down and figuring out what you have.

None of those things feel urgent...

Until suddenly one of them is.

Sometimes the hardest part is just putting a date on the calendar.

Life insurance isn't something you buy once and never think about again.

Life changes.

You get married.

Have kids.

Buy a house.

Change jobs.

Your income goes up.

Your debt goes down.

Ten years can go by pretty quickly, and the coverage that made sense then might not make sense today.

Even if you don't need anything new, knowing what you have and why you have it is important.

When was the last time you actually looked at your coverage?

Here’s a question nobody really likes answering:

If your paycheck stopped tomorrow, how long could everything at home continue exactly the way it does today?

Mortgage.

Groceries.

Car payments.

Kids.

Utilities.

Everything else life throws at you.

That's why I don't think conversations about protection need to be scary or uncomfortable.

It's really just asking:

Who depends on me, and what would I want life to look like for them if I wasn't here?

That's a conversation worth having.

Retirement is evolving. Many Americans are choosing to work longer, reflecting longer life expectancies and changing views on retirement. That shift can affect how long retirement savings may need to last and how income strategies are built.

If you're thinking about your own retirement timeline, I'd be happy to discuss how these trends could impact your long-term plans.
