Business owners: Your child could be one of your best tax strategies.

If you own a business and have children, hiring them for legitimate work could create a valuable tax-planning opportunity.

Consider this 2026 example:

A business owner pays her 13-year-old $16,100 to work in her business. Because the 2026 standard deduction for a single taxpayer is $16,100, the child owes $0 in federal income tax in this example.

Meanwhile, the business owner gets a $16,100 wage deduction—creating approximately $6,614 in federal and state tax savings.

And there could be another major benefit: because your child now has earned income, you can potentially begin building their retirement savings through an IRA or Roth IRA.

But this has to be done correctly.

✅ Your child must perform legitimate work
✅ Pay must be reasonable for the work performed
✅ Use proper payroll and issue a W-2
✅ Keep time sheets and payroll records
✅ Understand how your business structure affects the strategy

The takeaway: Instead of paying someone else to perform work your child could legitimately do, you may be able to create a business deduction, keep more money within your family, and give your child an early financial head start.

Call Kingdom Financial Solutions at 860-490-9741 to see if this strategy could work for your business.

Received an ERC refund in 2026? Don’t assume the tax story ends there.

If your business received an Employee Retention Credit (ERC) refund this year for wages paid in 2020 or 2021, you may have an opportunity to recover some of the tax paid on that refund.

Current IRS guidance generally says the refund should be reported as taxable income in 2026 if the original wage deductions were never reduced.

But a recent federal court case—Twitchco—may give some taxpayers additional support for challenging that treatment.

One strategy is to follow current IRS guidance while also filing a protective refund claim. That can help preserve your right to a refund if future court decisions ultimately go against the IRS’s position.

Important: this is not a guaranteed refund. Your filing dates, jurisdiction, and the facts surrounding your ERC claim all matter.

The takeaway: If you received an ERC refund in 2026, it may be worth reviewing your situation before simply paying the tax and moving on.

Have a home office?

One mistake could put your tax deduction at risk.

The home-office deduction can create valuable tax savings—and may even help turn certain trips into deductible business mileage instead of nondeductible commuting.

But there’s a catch: how you use the space matters.

For example:

✔️ Using the same office for your W-2 job could threaten the deduction for your self-employed business
✔️ If multiple businesses use the office, each must independently qualify
✔️ If you share the space with your spouse, their use matters too
✔️ S and C corporation owners may be able to use an accountable plan to reimburse qualifying home-office expenses

And losing the home-office deduction could potentially mean losing valuable business mileage deductions as well.

The takeaway: Having a home office isn’t enough. It needs to be structured and used correctly.

Working from home? Make sure you’re not accidentally putting valuable deductions at risk.

Lost money on a house flip? Don’t assume you can only deduct $3,000.

Depending on how your real estate activity is classified, you may potentially be able to deduct the entire loss in the current year.

The key question: Does the IRS consider you an investor or a real estate dealer?

An investor generally faces the $3,000 annual limitation on net capital losses against ordinary income.

But if your flipping activity qualifies as a business and you’re considered a dealer, qualifying losses may be able to offset ordinary income in full.

The IRS can look at factors like:

✔️ Why you purchased the property
✔️ The renovations you completed
✔️ How quickly you marketed it for sale
✔️ Whether you operated like a business
✔️ Your overall intent

There are tradeoffs, though. Dealer status can change how future profits are taxed and affect strategies such as 1031 exchanges.

The takeaway: How you structure and document your real estate activity matters.

Before your next flip, make sure you understand the tax implications.
