We showed her one number instead of arguing the point. Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors in history, built roughly 99% of his net worth after he turned 50 — not because his best ideas came late, but because compounding needs decades to actually show its work, and even a legendary investor’s early money looks almost irrelevant next to what patience and time eventually built on top of it.

If the most successful investor alive spent her fifties and sixties doing the heavy lifting, a thirty-four-year-old worried about being late was solving the wrong problem entirely. She wasn’t behind. She was standing at the exact point in the curve where almost nothing has happened yet, for anyone, ever.

Compounding isn’t linear, and most people quit or panic during the decades where the growth still looks unremarkable, right before it stops looking that way.

She thought she needed to catch up. She just needed to stay in long enough for the curve to do what it always eventually does.
