The last three months of the year are when good bookkeeping pays off. Clean books now mean fewer surprises in April, better year-end planning decisions, and a much calmer January for everyone involved. Especially us.

Where do your receipts live right now?
A) A labeled folder
B) The car's cup holder
C) An app I downloaded in 2023 and never opened
D) I'd rather not say

Drop your letter below. If you picked B, C, or D, our bookkeeping team would love to meet you. 😉

Tax Myth-Busting Friday.

The myth:
"My LLC protects me no matter what."

The reality:
It protects you right up until you buy groceries with the business debit card. Mix personal and business money often enough and a court can decide there was never a real line between the two.

It also turns your bookkeeping into an archaeological dig. A separate business account costs next to nothing. Skipping one can cost a whole lot more.

October is National Retirement Security Month, and for a lot of business owners, the retirement plan goes like this:

Step one: work nonstop.
Step two: sell the business.
Step three: beach.

Step two is carrying the whole plan. For 2026, you can put up to $24,500 into a 401(k), and there are about three months of paychecks left to get there. A business is a great thing to own and a risky thing to retire on. Build the plan that still works if nobody wants to buy it.

Something most people learn from a letter: Medicare premiums can be set by the tax return you filed two years ago. A big IRA withdrawal or a rental sale in one year can lead to a surcharge called IRMAA two years later.

Open enrollment starts October 15, so this is the week to know it. Retired or had another big life change since? You can ask Social Security to use your newer income. And if a big sale is on your horizon, tell us before it closes.

Happy National Coffee Day. Coffee with a client while you talk business: 50% deductible, yours included. Coffee alone at your desk: that's just called Tuesday.

The part people skip is the receipt. Jot down who you met and what you discussed while you're still standing at the counter, because "coffee with someone, probably work" is a tough sentence to defend later.

Every backyard BBQ has a guy who says, "You should really form an S-corp." He's not wrong. He's just not doing your math.

An S-corp can trim self-employment tax, but you'd also owe yourself a reasonable salary, run payroll, and file a separate return. For some owners, that saves thousands. For others, it costs more than it saves. It's a spreadsheet question, and nobody has ever answered it correctly over a burger.

Friday tax myth, because you deserve something light before the weekend: “Cash tips and cash jobs don’t show up anywhere, so they’re basically invisible to the IRS.”

They’re taxable the moment they hit your hand, invisible or not, and “nobody will ever know” is not a filing status. The IRS has entire audit techniques built specifically for cash-heavy businesses.

Report it now, or explain it later. Your choice which conversation you’d rather have.

It’s the last day to file that extended 2025 return, and also the last day for the self-employed to fund a SEP-IRA for 2025. Same deadline, two completely different ways to lower what you owe. One takes paperwork; the other takes a decision and a transfer. Don’t let procrastination cost you both.

If a storm sent you out the door tonight, could you grab five years of tax returns, W-2s, and insurance documents on your way out? Most people can’t, because those files live in a drawer, a dead login, or nowhere at all. A cloud folder takes ten minutes to set up and zero minutes to grab in a hurry. September is peak hurricane season in our backyard. Let’s not find out the hard way which documents actually mattered.

Fall starts today, and the tax year just entered its back nine. Days get shorter. Your window to make moves that lower this year’s bill gets shorter too. Retirement contributions, equipment purchases, timing income: all easier to adjust in October than to fix in a panic on New Year’s Eve. Let’s plan Q4 while there’s still a Q4 left to plan.
