Receiving an IRS envelope can make your stomach drop. I see that reaction often. As a CPA, I represent a great number of clients who have received an IRS letter or notice. My first message is simple: do not panic. My second is equally important: do not ignore it. Most IRS notices can be managed. Many involve missing information, payment records, or discrepancies. Some reflect an IRS error. Others require a clear explanation and supporting documents. The right response can protect your time, money, and peace of mind. A rushed response can create new problems.

Autumn brings cooler weather, changing leaves, and a natural shift toward year-end priorities. It also provides an important window to create a robust tax planning strategy. Too many taxpayers wait until filing season to assess their tax position. By then, many valuable planning opportunities have already expired. As a CPA specializing in tax advisory services, I encourage clients to plan before December ends. A timely projection creates clarity and supports better financial decisions.

As a CPA, I often talk with clients who know they should be saving for retirement but are unsure of how the IRA tax rules work, or what happens when they eventually need to take money out. Individual retirement accounts can be powerful planning tools, but the best choice depends on your income, tax bracket, cash flow, age, and long-term financial goals. The good news is that you do not have to make these decisions in a vacuum. With thoughtful planning, an IRA can help reduce taxes now, create tax-free income later, support charitable giving, and fit into your estate plan. Below is a practical overview of the key IRA issues I discuss most often with individuals, families, and business owners.

Are you earning money from something you started simply because you enjoyed it? If so, you are not alone—and you may be standing squarely in the middle of the Hobbies vs. Small Business Debate. As a seasoned CPA, I see this issue come up often with clients who turn a personal passion into occasional income. Some examples include selling handmade goods, coaching on the side, renting out equipment, or consulting after hours. The tax question is not just whether you made money. The real question is whether the IRS would view your activity as a hobby pursued for enjoyment or a small business operated with a genuine profit motive.

Smart Tax Planning isn’t a catch phrase — it’s a major factor when a small business owner is looking at options to reduce their company’s tax liability. Taxes can feel like a moving target for many small business owners. One month, cash flow looks strong – and then in the next, estimated taxes, payroll deposits, and quarterly deadlines can strain your budget. That is where a CPA can make a real difference. A good CPA does more than prepare returns. They help you plan, document, and make decisions before tax time arrives.

As a CPA serving small business clients virtually across the country, I see one problem with tax records more than almost any other: documents are everywhere. A receipt is in an email. A bank statement is on a website. A contractor invoice is saved to a laptop. A paper receipt is still sitting in a glove compartment. That scattered system creates stress at tax time. It also makes it harder to claim every deduction you deserve. Good tax records help you monitor your business, prepare financial statements, track deductible expenses, and support items reported on your tax return.

As a CPA, I look for planning opportunities that are both practical and defensible. The Augusta Rule can be one of them. Used correctly, it may let your business rent your home for meetings or events. You may then exclude that rental income from your federal taxable income. That sounds appealing, but the details matter. The strategy works best when it is planned before the rental occurs, and it needs strong documentation.
