Are Baby Boomers Helping Keep the U.S. Economy Strong?

Despite rising costs, inflation, and economic uncertainty, consumer spending remains surprisingly resilient. According to a recent CNBC report, Baby Boomers may be playing a significant role in keeping the economy moving.

Many older Americans have spent decades building wealth through retirement savings, investments, and homeownership, giving them greater financial flexibility than younger generations.

In fact, recent Federal Reserve data show that median net worth for households headed by someone 75 or older rose 37% between 2022 and 2025, while households headed by someone under 35 fell 23%.

What does this mean for your financial future?
Building long-term wealth isn't just about how much you earn. It's about how you save, invest, and prepare for retirement.
At Sage Investment Advisers LLC, we believe thoughtful financial planning and disciplined investment strategies can help you work toward financial security at every stage of life.

There is a ton of uncertainty in the markets lately. Stock, real estate, and credit markets have been volatile over the past several weeks.

Simply put, are you prepared for the worst-case scenario if it happens? Buy your umbrella before the storm, not during one. And hopefully we won't need it.

Could AI Stock Market Swings Be Affecting Your 401(k)?

Artificial intelligence has been a major driver of stock market growth, but recent volatility in AI-related stocks raises an important question: How much of your retirement savings is tied to AI?

Even if you don't directly invest in AI companies, your 401(k) may have more exposure than you realize.

According to Morningstar data cited by CNBC, five technology giants — Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon — account for approximately 30% of the S&P 500.

That means market swings involving just a handful of companies could have a significant impact on your retirement portfolio.

4 Steps to Help Protect Your Retirement Savings:

✅ 1. Know What You Own: Don't rely on a fund's name alone. Review the underlying investments in your 401(k), including index funds and target-date funds.

✅ 2. Rebalance Your Portfolio: If certain stocks or sectors have grown beyond your intended allocation, it may be time to rebalance and manage your exposure.

✅ 3. Consider Your Retirement Timeline: Those approaching retirement may benefit from keeping near-term spending needs in more stable investments while maintaining long-term growth opportunities.

✅ 4. Stay Focused on Your Goals: Don't let short-term market volatility dictate your long-term retirement decisions. Your investment strategy should reflect your financial goals and risk tolerance.

At Sage Investment Advisers, we believe retirement planning should be built around disciplined investing, thoughtful diversification, and long-term financial security — not chasing the latest market trends.

📞 When was the last time you reviewed your 401(k)? Let's make sure your retirement strategy is working toward your goals.

The SALT Deduction Limit Is $40,400 for 2026. Are You Taking Full Advantage?

If you live in a high-tax state like New York, changes to the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction could create valuable tax-planning opportunities.

For 2026, the federal SALT deduction cap has increased to $40,400, up from the previous $10,000 limit in 2024.

But just because the deduction is available doesn't mean everyone will benefit.

Here's what you should know:
✅ Itemizing Matters: The SALT deduction only benefits taxpayers who itemize rather than take the standard deduction.
✅ Timing Can Make a Difference: Strategically timing eligible property tax and state estimated tax payments could help maximize deductions.
✅ Income Limits Apply: The expanded deduction begins phasing out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income above $505,000 in 2026.
✅ Your Investments Matter, Too: Capital gains, Roth conversions, and other income-producing financial decisions could affect your eligibility for the full deduction.

At Sage Investment Advisers, we believe tax considerations should be part of your overall financial and retirement planning strategy, not an afterthought.

Smart financial planning isn't just about what you earn. It's also about what you keep.

Do you have an annuity of any kind? Why? What is its true purpose?

The very large majority of the annuities that people ask us to analyze are misused and alarmingly expensive with regard to hidden fees and costs.

Sometimes they can be an effective tool for a specific problem. More often than not, they are a cash suck. Buyer beware.

Social Security claiming ages may soon have new names — but the rules behind them aren’t changing.

The bipartisan Claiming Age Clarity Act would update the terminology used to describe when retirees can begin collecting Social Security:

🔹 Age 62 → “Minimum Benefit Age”
🔹 Ages 66–67 → “Standard Benefit Age”
🔹 Age 70 → “Maximum Benefit Age”

Why does the wording matter? Because the age you choose to claim Social Security can have a significant impact on the amount you receive for the rest of your life.

Claiming as early as age 62 can permanently reduce your monthly benefit compared with waiting until your standard benefit age. Delaying beyond that age can increase your benefit, up to age 70.

The proposed legislation does not change when you can claim or how benefits are calculated. The goal is simply to make the choices — and their financial consequences — easier to understand.

Social Security is only one part of retirement planning. The right claiming strategy should consider your income needs, savings, investments, taxes, longevity, and overall retirement plan.

Higher bond yields have pushed many bond prices lower — but those losses may create a potential tax-planning opportunity for some investors.

It’s called tax-loss harvesting.

If you own bonds, bond funds, or ETFs in a taxable investment account that are currently worth less than what you paid, selling an investment at a loss may allow you to:

• Offset realized capital gains elsewhere in your portfolio
• Potentially offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income when eligible
• Carry unused capital losses forward to future tax years
• Reposition part of your portfolio while reviewing today’s higher-yield environment

But taxes shouldn’t be the only reason to make an investment decision.

There are important considerations, including the IRS wash-sale rule, your current portfolio allocation, income needs, time horizon, and overall investment strategy.

At Sage Investment Advisers, we believe market changes are an opportunity to review your financial plan — not simply react to headlines.

If recent changes in the bond market have affected your portfolio, it may be worth reviewing whether your investments are still positioned appropriately for your long-term goals.

AI stocks are making headlines—but even if you don’t own an individual AI stock, your 401(k) may still have significant exposure.

Many broad-market and S&P 500 funds hold large positions in major technology companies tied to the AI boom. That means volatility in a relatively small group of companies can have a noticeable impact on retirement account balances.

The key? Know what you own.

✔️ Review the underlying holdings in your 401(k) funds
✔️ Understand how concentrated your portfolio may be
✔️ Rebalance when your allocation moves away from your long-term strategy
✔️ Keep your retirement goals—not short-term headlines—at the center of your decisions

Market trends come and go. A well-constructed retirement strategy should be built with the understanding that volatility will happen along the way.

At Sage Investment Advisers, we help investors understand their portfolios, manage risk, and stay focused on the bigger picture.
