October is Financial Planning Month, which makes it a useful moment to ask a question that rarely comes up on its own: does your plan still match the life you are actually living? Plans are built on assumptions, and assumptions quietly expire. A new role, a growing family, a business that scaled faster than expected, each one changes the math underneath.

At Treehouse Wealth Advisors, we would rather your plan keep pace with your life than the other way around. If yours has not been revisited since the day it was written, this is the month worth giving it.

Most college planning advice is written for families trying to qualify for financial aid. If you are building a business, a portfolio, or a legacy across generations, that playbook can quietly cost you money and flexibility you never needed to give up.

The better questions look different. How do you keep a 529 flexible instead of locked into one outcome? What can a grandparent actually do? How do you fund a child's education without shortchanging your own retirement? Lexi Olian, CFP®, walks through what changes when college is treated as a coordination question.

There is a common assumption among high-earning families that good investing is the same as good financial planning. It is an understandable one. When income is high, and the portfolio is growing, the investment account can feel like the whole map. But a map is only useful if you know where you are going.

Taxes erode wealth in ways that are not always visible. Estates do not organize themselves. And the values that motivate the earning rarely show up on an account statement. Olian, CFP®, explains why integrated planning is a different discipline than investment management, not a premium version of it: https://bit.ly/4iHIb7L

Financial planning for high income families should integrate taxes, estate planning, philanthropy, and long-term decision-making, not just investments.

Sometimes the best conversations start with the simplest ideas. At our latest book club, we sat down with Libby DeLana's "Do Walk" and swapped stories about the walks that help us breathe a little easier, feel more connected, and notice the world around us. We even talked about what happens when you take your shoes off!

Catch the full recap on our blog, and we'd love for you to walk with us in the San Francisco Presidio on October 3.

Generosity has never required a tax strategy. But this year, having one makes every dollar go further.

New federal rules changed how charitable deductions work in 2026, and they reward donors who plan ahead. Donating appreciated stock, bunching gifts, and donor-advised funds all matter more than they did a year ago. Meanwhile, the real deadlines arrive earlier than most people expect, because stock transfers, fund setup, and IRA gifts all need lead time before December 31.

Our latest blog breaks down what changed, which strategies benefit, and why the smartest giving season starts in the fall. https://treehousewealth.com/charitable-giving-strategies-year-end/

September is National Preparedness Month, and while most of the conversation centers on emergency kits and evacuation routes, financial preparedness deserves equal attention. For Bay Area families in particular, the question is not only whether you have coverage, but whether the people who would need to act on your behalf could actually find what they need.

Preparedness looks like current beneficiary designations, estate documents someone could locate without a scavenger hunt, a cash reserve you could reach quickly, and insurance that reflects the life you have now rather than the one you had five years ago. None of it takes long. All of it matters more than we hope it ever will.

Money remains one of the last taboo conversation topics, and it can be a source of pride, stress, embarrassment, and generosity all at once. Most of us were never given a place to talk about it honestly.

That is why we host Insights and Outcomes: Conversation Circles for Women. No spreadsheets and no investment pitches, just a small group sitting together around a topic like "What's Your Money Story?" or "Navigating Difficult Money Conversations with Loved Ones," learning from each other. If you would like to join a future circle or host one of your own, we would love to hear from you: https://bit.ly/462y8CP

Join our financial planning workshops. Conversation Circles offer community education on wealth management topics in the Bay Area.

What would financial advice look like if women's strengths, concerns, and preferences were the norm rather than the exception? That question is the foundation of Rewriting the Rules, our book on learning to invest like a woman, now in its third edition.

It is a practical look at where conventional wisdom has fallen short and what a better approach looks like in real life, from how risk gets defined to how success gets measured. The third edition is available to download on our website.

Equity compensation does exactly what it is designed to do. It ties your financial upside to one company, and for a long stretch that may work in your favor. Then one day you look at your accounts and realize you are not holding a diversified portfolio. You are holding one company's stock in the shape of one.

Trimming a concentrated position does not require losing faith in the stock. It means your future stops depending entirely on what happens to it. Diane Bourdo, CFP®, walks through how to diversify deliberately, from staging sales across tax years to donating appreciated shares, without handing over more than necessary: https://treehousewealth.com/concentrated-stock-risk-tax-strategies/

Concentrated stock risk tax strategies can help high earners diversify thoughtfully while managing taxes, liquidity, and long-term financial goals.

Many parents put off talking with their adult children about wealth, worried that knowing too much too soon might dull their drive. What we see is closer to the opposite. When children sense there is wealth but do not understand its purpose, they fill the gap with assumptions, and those assumptions quietly shape decisions about careers, spending, and risk.

Context does the opposite work. A child who understands how the wealth was built and what it is meant to accomplish tends to treat it with more care, not less. Julie Meissner shares why values should come before numbers, and when to bring the next generation into the conversation: https://bit.ly/4x64JCW

Family wealth conversations with adult children can strengthen financial confidence, family values, and legacy planning when handled intentionally.
