Can you claim your Mom or Dad on your tax return? Many people are surprised to learn that you might be able to!

If you're helping support your mom or dad by paying for things like housing, food, medical expenses, or utilities, you may be able to claim them as a dependent.

There are a few IRS rules, including how much income they have and whether you provide more than half of their support. Every situation is different, but it's definitely worth asking if you're helping care for a parent.

💡 Did You Know? There Are TWO Different IRS Penalties for Filing Late.
Many people think there's just one "late penalty," but there are actually two:
📄 Failure-to-File Penalty
This applies if you don't file your tax return by the due date (including extensions). It is usually the more expensive of the two penalties.
💰 Failure-to-Pay Penalty
Even if you file your return on time, you'll still owe a penalty if you don't pay the tax you owe by the due date. Interest is also charged until the balance is paid.
✅ The best strategy?
If you can't afford to pay your tax bill, file your return anyway! Filing on time can significantly reduce the penalties you'll owe.
If you've received an IRS penalty notice, don't panic. In some situations, the IRS may reduce or remove penalties if you qualify.
