Apple announced a folding iPhone, available beginning in October. Folded, the new phone has a screen on the front, and it unfolds to a large screen the size of a small tablet, such as iPad mini.

We have heard that some seniors have trouble reading text on a phone, so this new product may be especially helpful for them—they won’t have to reach for magnifying glasses to read the unfolded screen. Advertising typically targets younger demographics, so seniors may not realize the unique benefits for them. We hope there will be more and more technology to make seniors lives easier (instead of harder, which is sometimes the case).

Estate planning is usually focused on the transfer of financial assets rather than physical assets, but the question of what to do with all your stuff still has to be addressed. The second-hand market for clothing and other goods is currently booming. Its growth may be attributed to Americans turning to second-hand products to save money, or possibly because artificial intelligence allows a much quicker assessment of potential value, sometimes making huge gains possible through buying low and selling high. Those gains can be yours and your beneficiaries’ if you downsize early, inventory and sell all unwanted stuff instead of leaving it for an estate auction.

There is no way to know if the market will change and the items will become more valuable in the future; however, with the large baby boomers upcoming shift in assets to the next generation, it is worth considering that the second-hand market might become saturated. Starting early has the bonus benefit of giving time to document sentimental values and share stories with beneficiaries.

Scam emails are getting more sophisticated. Here’s an example that happened this last month - Colleague A received an email correspondence from Colleague B that claimed to have approved an invoice weeks earlier with the fictitious email correspondence pasted below. Disturbingly, the email correspondence included the real email address, title, and names of the colleagues; however, upon closer inspection one could tell that the email itself had not come from the company mail server but another email address, and though the information in the email signature had not been inaccurate, it differed from the usual sign-off.

There is more personal information available to scam artists than ever before, and scammers can use AI tools to scrape the internet for that information and incorporate it to individualize each scam message. That reduces cost for scammers for the individualized approach, which is likely to be more effective. Let’s all be vigilant and make sure to double-check the email addresses of the senders. Though that might be hacked too, many scams and phishing attempts can be prevented through that simple first step.

Online sports betting has been legal in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for over five years, and its acceptance throughout the country has grown considerably in a short time. According to ESPN, Americans bet a record $166.94 billion on sports last year! https://www.espn.com/espn/betting/story/_/id/48045855/sports-betting-hits-record-1696-billion-revenue-2025 The census shows how this has created a tax windfall for state governments, including PA and NJ, and of course there are some big winners to such wagers. https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2025/12/sports-betting.html There are losers as well, and the nearly $17 billion in revenue for facilitating sports betting must come from somewhere.

Acceptance has grown to the point where, according to a recent survey, 26% of Gen Z investors would suggest that sports betting is a deliberate part of a long-term investment strategy (compared with just 1% for baby boomers). https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/betterments-2026-retail-investor-survey-reveals-a-new-generation-of-investors-is-blurring-the-lines-between-information-advice-and-entertainment-302848376.html Other views are considerably different between generations in the survey too. At Garden State Trust Company, we work to create a lasting legacy across generations, and as trustees must follow the prudent investor rule. That’s just one benefit of having a trustee.
