Retired this year?

Your tax return may tell two stories: the months you worked and the months after.

Wages earned before retirement still count. Add pension payments, Social Security benefits or retirement-account distributions, and your tax picture may look different from last year’s.

Start by gathering your final pay stub, current benefit and retirement-account statements, and records of any estimated tax payments.

Before year-end, talk with JRJ about what changed — and whether your withholding or estimated payments need attention.

Picked up a second job this year? We get it. We buy gas and groceries, too. We’ve seen the prices.

But here’s something you may not have considered …

When you work more than one job, each employer may calculate your tax withholding without accounting for what you earn at the other. Put those incomes together at tax time, and you could discover that you haven't had enough withheld.

That's a surprise tax bill you’d rather avoid.

Check your withholding now, while there's still time to make adjustments before the end of the year.

The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help, or give JRJ a call and we'll help you take a look.

Q4 starts tomorrow.

Do you know where your business stands?

By the end of September, business owners should have a reasonably clear picture of year-to-date revenue, expenses and estimated profit. If you haven't looked closely at those numbers lately, Q4 is the time.

Why? Because you can't make good year-end decisions around numbers you haven't reviewed.

Before the calendar gets crowded with holidays and year-end deadlines, take a look at the financial picture now. Knowing where you stand gives you time to ask better questions and make more informed decisions before December 31.

Filed an extension for your 2025 federal tax return? October 15 is getting closer.

An extension gave you more time to file. It didn't make the return disappear — and waiting until October 14 to start gathering documents can turn that extra time into extra stress.

Use the next couple of weeks to pull together anything that's still missing, answer outstanding questions and give your tax preparer time to complete the return accurately.

If you still need help getting your extended return across the finish line, now is the time to call JRJ.

Ever hear someone shrug and say, “Oh, well. It’s a write-off, ” almost like they think they’re getting something for free?

It would be great if that were true. It would be amazing. But … it’s not.

A tax deduction can reduce the amount of income that's subject to tax. It does not mean the government reimburses you for the purchase. And not every business expense is automatically deductible — or deductible all at once.

So spending $1,000 just to "get the write-off" usually doesn't make sense if your business didn't actually need what you bought.

The better question isn't, "Can I write this off?"

It's, "Does this expense make sense for my business, and how should it be treated for tax purposes?"

That's a conversation worth having with your tax professional before the year is over.

Office supplies and groceries in the same cart?

Separate them at checkout — and use the right card for each.

A dedicated business account and card make it infinitely easier to track business spending. Save the itemized receipt, too, and note the business purpose while it’s fresh in your mind.

That small habit means less sorting later and better documentation to support your business expenses at tax time.

Keep the line clear. Give your future self less to untangle.

Questions about your business tax records? We’ve got you covered.

Did you get a raise, bonus or a second job this year?

It could change your tax picture. The amount withheld from your paycheck may need a second look.

Too little withheld could mean an unexpected tax bill when you file. Too much could mean less take-home pay now and a larger refund later.

September is a good time to check whether your withholding still fits your life — while there’s time to make adjustments before year-end.

Questions? JRJ can help you figure out whether an update makes sense.

Tuesday is tax day for some of us. 📆

The next quarterly estimated tax payment is due September 15.

If you’re self-employed, own a business or otherwise make estimated payments, consider this your friendly Friday reminder to get it taken care of before the deadline.

It’s September, and it’s hurricane season across our region.

It’s also National Preparedness Month.

Funny how that works.

At JRJ, when we think about preparedness, we’re not talking about an elaborate underground bunker filled with canned goods for the next hurricane or the zombie apocalypse.

Although if you’ve got one, hey, good for you.

But it’s our job to also think about financial preparedness.

And to remind you to back up your important tax and financial records.

Save secure electronic copies of tax returns, insurance documents, property records, business records and other information that could be difficult to replace after a disaster.

Prepare for the storm before there's a storm to prepare for.
