Big news happening with Medicare Advantage plans in MN. Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) is dropping their Medicare Advantage plans. They do plan to reintroduce them at some point but the current plans are being eliminated. This is on top of Humana, Health Partners, and UCare dropping their plans or scaling them back. There are about 600,000 Medicare Advantage participants in MN and these 4 carriers represent about 370,000 of those participants with BCBS representing more than half. So, all of the people on those plans will need to use the Open Enrollment period from October 15 - December 7 to select a new plan. That is the bad news. The good news is that because those plans are being terminated all of those participants have the opportunity to get guaranteed issue for new Medicare Supplement plans regardless of their health situation. MN has 87 counties and 18 of those counties next year will have no Medicare Advantage plan available in their counties. The remaining providers in MN will be increasing their premium to the 2nd highest average in all of the USA alongside also increasing their deductibles and copays.
