Extensions are due October 15th. The penalty for not filing your federal income tax return by the extended deadline is the "failure-to-file" penalty, which costs 5% of the unpaid taxes owed for each month (or part of a month) your return is late, up to a maximum of 25% of the unpaid tax. If you are due a refund, there is no penalty.
