Your tax extension is almost out of extension. 📅😅

If you received a valid federal extension for your 2025 individual tax return, your filing deadline is generally October 15, 2026. California’s automatic individual filing extension ends that day, too.

Yes, business owners, that includes many of you.

The extension gave you more time to file. Payment was generally still due April 15. Certain disaster and other special relief may change your deadline, so confirm with your tax preparer.

Your assignment this week:
✅ Send the missing statements and documents.
✅ Resolve those “I’ll remember what that was” transactions.
✅ Confirm your tax preparer has the final bookkeeping reports.

A folder named “Taxes FINAL final actually final” is not a filing confirmation. 😉

Better Bookkeepers can help organize your records and resolve bookkeeping questions so your tax preparer can finish the return.

Contact us now if your books are holding things up. October 15 does not care how busy October got.

Your cash drawer is getting new rules. Sadly, “close enough” is still not a bookkeeping policy. 😂

California signed AB 1793 into law on September 30, 2026.

Starting July 1, 2027, covered businesses selling goods or services at physical California locations must round cash payments to the nearest nickel.

The cash portion of mixed payments and cash refunds are included. Payments entirely by card or other covered noncash methods are excluded. Transactions totaling two cents or less are also exempt.

Example for a purchase paid entirely in cash:
$12.42 becomes $12.40.
$12.43 becomes $12.45.

Tax calculations stay based on the amount before rounding.

Business owner homework: Ask your POS provider about its update plan, prepare staff instructions, and make sure rounding adjustments can be tracked in your books. Better Bookkeepers can help you plan how those adjustments flow into your daily reconciliation.

Tiny coins. Actual accounting. Let’s get the setup right before July 2027. 😉

Whatever you call her, just don’t wait until your books are 6 months behind to call. 😂📞

If “I’ll catch up on bookkeeping later” has turned into a pile of uncategorized transactions, missing receipts, and accounts that haven’t been reconciled in months… we've has probably seen worse.

And with year-end getting closer, “later” is quickly becoming now. 👀

Your gas tank has developed ch*****ne taste. Your business budget would like a word. ⛽🙃

California regular gas is averaging $6.39 a gallon as of October 5, 2026. That’s about 72 cents more than a month ago.

Why? High crude oil costs and instability around a major global oil shipping route are putting pressure on prices. California just allowed an early switch to winter gasoline to help with supply. Whether that brings quick relief at your station remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, your work truck would still like breakfast.

If your business makes deliveries, visits clients, or sends crews to job sites, this belongs in your bookkeeping conversation.

An example: At 500 gallons a month, a 72 cent increase means about $360 more in monthly fuel costs. Same driving. Same customers. Less money left over.

Here’s your homework:

⛽ Track fuel costs consistently by vehicle or job where practical. Keep receipts and business mileage records.

📊 Compare gallons used AND dollars spent. A bigger fuel bill does not automatically mean you drove more.

💰 Update your cash budget and check whether new job quotes cover today’s travel costs.

You do not need to panic and raise every price tomorrow. You do need to know whether yesterday’s pricing still works.

Better Bookkeepers can help you see where rising costs are squeezing your margins so you can make decisions with actual numbers.

We cannot negotiate with the gas pump. We can help you stop letting it surprise your budget. 😉

Your software subscriptions would like to discuss their 2027 compensation package. 💻💸

Apparently, being on autopay wasn’t enough.

Beginning January 1, 2027, California sales and use tax will generally apply to prewritten software, including many online software subscriptions.

Translation: That monthly software bill may be getting a little extra ✨personality✨.

Before you finalize your budget:
✅ Review what you’re paying for
✅ Ask vendors how they’ll handle California tax
✅ Budget for applicable increases
✅ Check invoices for missing tax

Plot twist: If the vendor doesn’t collect applicable tax, your business may still owe use tax. “But nobody charged me” is not the loophole we were hoping for.

Exemptions apply, so don’t assume every digital purchase is taxable.

Need help getting your software expenses organized? Better Bookkeepers can help. We like our surprises at birthday parties, not in operating expenses.

You build the houses. We’ll bring up the accounting at the party. Somebody has to. 🏗️☕

The IRS has updated procedures for certain tax accounting method changes involving qualifying residential construction contracts and research expenses.

Still with us? Good. Here’s why you might care.

How your business treats certain costs and income for tax purposes deserves a conversation with your tax professional. The updated guidance may give eligible businesses options worth reviewing.

Your conversation starter:
“Does Revenue Procedure 2026‑32 apply to us, and what records do you need?”

Look at you. Walking into that meeting prepared. 👏

Better Bookkeepers can help organize project costs, supporting documents, and reconciliations so your tax professional has something better to work with than “I think it’s in an email somewhere.”

Eligibility and filing requirements apply. Any method change belongs in a conversation with your tax professional, and savings are not guaranteed.

Let’s get the books ready for the conversation.

🚩 A promise to erase your tax bill could cost you more.

The IRS is warning businesses and taxpayers about scammers selling fake “Tribal Tax Credits.” These purported federal tax credits do not exist.

Watch for these red flags:
✅ Pressure to purchase credits quickly
✅ Promises of large refunds or discounted tax savings
✅ Claims of secret government agreements
✅ Legal opinions you cannot independently verify

Before paying a promoter or claiming a credit, have your trusted tax professional review the offer. An accepted tax return does not mean the IRS approved the credit.

At Better Bookkeepers, we encourage business owners to ask questions before money changes hands. Protecting your business starts with reliable information.
