The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help workers determine whether they are having too much or too little federal income tax withheld. The free online tool uses information such as recent pay statements, income, deductions, and credits to estimate federal income tax withholding.

If an adjustment is needed, workers can use the estimator results to help complete a new Form W-4 and submit it to their employer. Form W-4 should not be sent to the IRS.

If you need help or want to hire us to check this for you we can do it for a nominal fee @$25.00

8. Ghost preparers. A “ghost” preparer prepares a return but refuses to sign it and/or refuses to include a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). When a preparer refuses to sign or provide a PTIN, that is a major red flag; the taxpayer is legally responsible for what is filed. The IRS urges taxpayers to avoid preparers who will not sign the return and to choose reputable help. Taxpayers should never sign a blank or incomplete return. Instead, the IRS reminds taxpayers to use a trusted tax professional for help.

I know of a few and there's a few things to look out for. They are not there to help you, but to take money from you without your consent. They may make up a business you don't have to lower your taxable income to increase your refund, which could result in audits or fines by the IRS or State MDOR (MS Dept of Revenue). Stop trusting preparers like this and use a licensed preparer, it doesn't have to be Thomas Tax Service either. Also sign up for the ID.ME account through the IRS.GOV website to look at past returns transcripts to verify what is being filed. You may see something alarming!! Just trust a professional that has a good reputation in the field.

This is straight from the IRS Tax Fraud is one of the biggest problems the Government tries to fight! It happens every year. At Thomas Tax Service we strive to fight tax fraud every day.

Quick tips for picking a tax pro

By now, people should have received most of their tax documents so it’s time to get ready to file their federal tax returns. More than one half of taxpayers use a paid tax professional to help prepare their return. Regardless of who prepares the tax return, the taxpayer is responsible for all the information on it. This is why it’s important to choose a tax pro carefully.

Tips for choosing a tax professional:

Availability: Choose a preparer that’s available after filing season in case questions come up after filing.
Service fees: Ask about the preparer’s service fees. Taxpayers should avoid tax return preparers who base their fees on a percentage of the refund.
IRS e-file: Ensure their preparer offers IRS e-file. The IRS issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days for taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit and file a complete and accurate return.
Records and receipts: Good preparers ask to see these documents to complete the return accurately.
Qualifications: Understand the preparer's credentials and qualifications. Check their history for complaints or disciplinary actions.
Review before signing: Always review the tax return before signing it. Ask questions if something is unclear or appears incorrect. Never sign a blank or incomplete return.
Accurate account information: Make sure any refund goes directly into the taxpayer's bank account – not into the preparer's bank account. Review the routing and bank account number on the completed return to confirm it's accurate.
By law, anyone who is paid to prepare or assists in preparing federal tax returns must have a valid preparer tax identification number. Paid preparers must sign and include their PTIN on any tax return they prepare. Not signing a return, promising an unusually large refund or charging fees based on the size of the refund are red flags that the preparer may be looking to make a quick profit. Taxpayers should avoid these preparers.

Complaints about a preparer
Tax return preparer fraud is a common tax scam. The IRS provides tips on avoiding unscrupulous tax preparers. Taxpayers can also file a complaint if they’ve been financially harmed by a tax return preparer's misconduct or improper tax preparation practices.

PSA. Tax season is also scam season. I’ve already had a client who was filed without consent, signature, or permission from another unaffiliated tax office.

We don’t play games with personal information and abide by the laws protecting your identity. If something doesn’t feel right about your tax person do not release any information to them. Come see Thomas Tax Service instead.

Always make sure you have a copy of your tax return before anything is filed.

Today's scam comes from a text saying it's MS Dept of Revenue wanting your bank info to deposit your tax refund. 1st off, the DOR is closed today, 2nd, they never text or call, letters are always mailed to your address on file.
This is a scam so please DO NOT give them anything but a delete and report as spam. Please share, I've had 8 calls and texts today about the same thing.

Thanks to all who use Thomas Tax Service Inc.
