My least favorite tax mistakes are not always the complicated ones.
They are usually the preventable ones:
- Waiting until tax season to ask questions
- Forgetting quarterly estimated tax payments
- Treating every purchase as automatically deductible
- Failing to separate personal and business spending
- Not keeping documentation
- Assuming bookkeeping and tax planning are the same thing
For therapists, these mistakes can become especially frustrating because your business may be growing while your financial systems stay informal.
Good tax planning starts before the return is due. It starts with accurate books, regular conversations, and a clear understanding of how your practice is earning and spending money.
The goal is not to find a magical deduction. The goal is to make informed decisions throughout the year.
Which tax mistake do you see most often?

Some of the most expensive business problems are the ones owners have started calling “normal.”
Things like:
- Not knowing whether the business is profitable
- Mixing personal and business spending
- Waiting until tax season to look at the books
- Making payroll decisions from the bank balance
- Carrying every financial decision alone
- Assuming being busy automatically means being successful
I see small business owners normalize financial confusion because they are used to operating that way.
But your business can be organized. Your numbers can be useful. Your decisions can feel less reactive.
You do not need to know everything about accounting to become a better business owner. You need the right information, reviewed consistently, with someone who can help you understand what it means.
What have you been treating as “normal” that may actually need attention?

“No tax on overtime” does not mean every dollar of overtime is completely tax-free.
Current federal rules may allow eligible workers to deduct the qualified overtime portion that exceeds their regular rate of pay.
That is different from saying all overtime compensation is excluded from income or that no tax will be withheld from the paycheck.
The details matter, including how the overtime is calculated, how it is reported, your income level, and your filing situation.
If you or your employees are working overtime, keep your pay statements and review how the compensation is being reported. A tax benefit is only useful when it is properly documented and claimed.
This is general tax education, not individualized tax advice.

September is the perfect time for therapists to lock in their financial plan for the rest of the year.
Before the year gets even busier, take a close look at:
- Year-to-date revenue
- Business profit
- Tax savings
- Owner pay
- Upcoming expenses
- Payroll decisions
- Any equipment, retirement, or business purchases you are considering
The goal is not to create more work. It is to replace uncertainty with a clear plan.
When your bookkeeping and tax strategy are connected, you can make decisions with more confidence—and finish the year without the familiar last-minute panic.
If you own a therapy practice, this is your reminder: your financial systems deserve attention before tax season arrives.

My fall fashion essentials as a bookkeeper for therapists: blue-light glasses, water, reminders, and reconciled accounts.
Bookkeeping may not look glamorous, but the details matter.
A clean bank reconciliation.
A monthly close.
Accurate income and expense tracking.
A clear picture of what your therapy practice is actually earning.
Those things may not be as exciting as a new outfit, but they create something much more valuable: confidence.
When therapists understand their numbers, they can make better decisions about time, pricing, hiring, owner pay, and growth.
So yes, I drink a lot of water and set reminders to stand up. But I also believe your bookkeeping deserves regular attention—not just a frantic review at tax time.
Therapists, what is on your bookkeeping essentials list?

Before you hire me, there are a few things I want you to know.
I’m not the accountant who only wants to see your books once a year.
I care about whether you understand your numbers, whether your business decisions make sense, whether you’re paying yourself intentionally, and whether your bookkeeping is helping you—or creating more questions.
I also believe you should know who you’re hiring. I’m a tax accountant, but my work goes far beyond tax filing. I help small business owners understand bookkeeping, tax planning, payroll, cash flow, profitability, and the financial decisions behind a growing business.
And yes, I may be at a concert or dancing on the weekend. I’m still a serious accountant. I just believe business owners are whole people, too.
What do you wish you knew before hiring your accountant?

If I suddenly needed a tax accountant, here is what I would look for.
I would want someone who:
- Explains things clearly
- Understands small businesses
- Answers questions without making me feel embarrassed
- Looks beyond the tax return
- Helps me plan before deadlines arrive
- Keeps my information organized
- Tells me what I need to know—not just what I want to hear
Tax work requires technical knowledge, but trust is just as important.
You should feel comfortable sharing the real numbers, asking basic questions, and discussing decisions before they become emergencies.
A good accountant should help you feel more informed—not more intimidated.
What is the most important quality you look for in a tax professional?

Your fall financial reset should be more than cleaning out a closet.
September is a useful time to pause and ask:
- What has the business earned so far this year?
- Are the books reconciled?
- Are taxes being set aside?
- Is cash flow strong enough for the next few months?
- Are you still paying yourself intentionally?
- What decisions need to happen before December 31?
For service providers, fall is often when the year becomes clearer. You have enough information to see patterns, but there is still time to make adjustments.
A financial reset gives you the chance to finish the year with a plan instead of reacting to surprises in January.
Your books are not just a record of the past. They are a tool for deciding what happens next.

Won money gambling? The IRS may still want to know about it.
Gambling winnings are generally taxable income, even if you never receive a Form W-2G.
That can include winnings from casinos, sports betting, lotteries, raffles, horse racing, and other forms of wagering.
The other important piece is recordkeeping. If you plan to claim gambling losses, you need documentation—and the rules are not as simple as subtracting every loss from every win.
Beginning in 2026, federal rules also limit the gambling loss deduction to the lesser of 90% of gambling losses or gambling winnings, along with other requirements.
If gambling income is part of your tax picture, don’t wait until filing season to start looking for records.
This is general tax education. Your filing situation and state rules may be different.

Therapists, your books do not have to be perfect before you ask for help. That’s what bookkeeping support is for. 🧾

A few of my biggest pet peeves:

• Waiting until the books are a mess before getting help
• Being talked down to by a financial “professional”
• Making major business decisions based only on the bank balance
• Assuming bookkeeping is just data entry

Your practice deserves accurate numbers, clear guidance, and a bookkeeper who understands the unique needs of mental-health professionals.

Which one have you experienced?
