Major federal changes took effect July 1, including new repayment plans and changes to eligibility for some existing programs. The SAVE plan has also ended following a court order, and affected borrowers are being directed to explore other repayment options.

🐌 Paper tax returns are facing major processing delays.

According to SBFP President Tara Unverzagt, the IRS is currently 611 days behind on processing paper federal tax returns. While some taxpayers have no choice but to file on paper, there are steps you can take to help protect your information and stay on track with e-filing when possible.

Tara’s advice:

🔐 Create an IRS online account and regularly check for activity you don’t recognize.

🛡️ Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN. This PIN helps prevent someone else from filing a fraudulent return using your Social Security number. Keep it private and share it only with your tax professional when necessary.

📋 Ask your tax professional how they protect your data. Tara recommends asking to see their Written Information Security Plan (WISP), which tax professionals are required by the IRS to have.

As Tara puts it: “If they can't answer or you don't like their answer, get a new tax professional.”

A few simple precautions can go a long way toward protecting your identity and making tax season a little less stressful.

🔥 How do financially successful people learn to become good investors? Oftentimes, they find a role model. You can, too!

Find a role model who’s thoughtful, grounded, and financially intentional. Ask them how they think about money. Learn from what’s working in their life, and adapt it to yours.

💸🤫 For many women, the word “investor” feels off-limits, like a title you only earn once you’ve hit a certain net worth or cracked some secret financial code. But in reality, investing is already woven into your life. You may have invested in your education, your health, your family, your career — or all of the above.

To embody your role as an investor, SBFP president Tara Unverzagt recommends a simple thought exercise.

💭 Finish the sentence: “I am the kind of investor who _.”
