October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the IRS is urging Americans to protect their personal data from hackers and other fraud perpetrators. Always use strong passwords, updated security software and multifactor authentication. Many security experts also advocate using “passkeys” when possible. The IRS says that tax identity theft remains a real threat. So individual and business taxpayers should employ IRS tools, such as the Identity Protection PIN, Online Account for Individuals and Business Tax Account. Also ignore any unexpected phone, email or text messages that claim to be from the IRS. If you receive a suspicious message, report it to IRS.gov/SubmitATip.

An important tax deadline is fast approaching: Thursday, Oct. 15, is the due date for taxpayers who filed for a six-month extension to file their 2025 individual federal income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR). If you still need to file, gather Social Security numbers for everyone on your return; bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit; any Forms W-2 and 1099; records related to any virtual currency transactions; and supporting documents for credits or deductions you’re claiming. Oct. 15 is also the deadline to file a 2025 federal gift tax return (Form 709) for taxpayers who filed a six-month extension. Contact us for assistance with filing your tax forms.

The IRS says you’re deceased, but you’re very much alive. It sounds unbelievable, but this unusual situation can happen when an incorrect Social Security number (SSN) is entered on your tax return or when Social Security Administration (SSA) records mistakenly indicate that you or your spouse have died. If you receive IRS Notice CP01H, verify that the SSN on the return in question matches your Social Security card. If it does, contact the SSA to see whether its records need to be corrected. Then follow the notice instructions to unlock your IRS account. Call us at 708-864-4071 for help resolving this issue promptly.

⛳️❤️ OUT OF OFFICE — COMMUNITY DUTY CALLS! ❤️⛳️
Our office will be CLOSED tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7, while Team Abendroth heads out for the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce One Club Challenge!
Now, before anyone gets too excited...
Danielle will NOT be golfing. 😂
Apparently, swinging a golf club a few weeks after shoulder surgery is "frowned upon" by the medical community. 🙄⛳️
So while the golf clubs are staying safely out of Danielle's hands, we'll still be out there supporting the Chamber, volunteering, visiting with our fellow local businesses, and enjoying a great community event. ❤️
Mikayla is getting thrown right into the Abendroth version of onboarding:
✅ Day 1: Learn the office
✅ Day 2: Meet the clients
✅ Day 3: WELCOME TO THE CHAMBER — WE HAVE A TENT. 😂
Our office will reopen Thursday, October 8, and we'll respond to messages and emails when we're back.
We're proud to support the organizations and events that make our local business community such a great one to be part of.
And don't worry...
Danielle has been instructed to keep both hands off the golf clubs. 😇😂
⛳️❤️ Good friends. Great service. That's what counts.

🎉❤️ PLEASE HELP US WELCOME MIKAYLA TO THE ABENDROTH TEAM! ❤️🎉
We're very excited to officially introduce the newest member of Abendroth Accounting & Tax Services — Mikayla!
Mikayla has joined our team and will be helping keep things running around the office, assisting our clients, tackling administrative projects, helping with social media, and—once Danielle gets ahold of her—probably learning approximately 47 other things she didn't know were in the job description. 😂
We're excited to have her here, and even more excited for our clients and community to get to know her!
And because starting a new job deserves more than eating lunch at your desk...
🥳 We're taking Mikayla out for a proper Welcome-to-the-Team lunch!
Our office will be CLOSED TODAY from 11:30 AM–2:00 PM while we celebrate our newest team member. 🍽️❤️
We'll reopen at 2:00 PM and be back to business as usual—hopefully well-fed and without putting Mikayla through too much accounting talk over lunch. 😂
👇 Help us give Mikayla a big Abendroth welcome in the comments!
Welcome to the team, Mikayla! We're so happy you're here. ❤️
Good friends. Great service. That's what counts.

Giving away assets during your life can reduce the size of your taxable estate. One option is to pay someone’s tuition or medical expenses. Such payments can be gift-tax-free — but only if you make them directly to a qualifying educational institution or medical provider. (Advancing the funds to a loved one or reimbursing previously paid expenses doesn’t count.) Unlike making gifts under the gift tax annual exclusion ($19,000 per recipient for 2026), there’s no limit on the amount of tuition or medical expenses you can pay tax-free. Call us at 708-864-4071 to learn more about lifetime gifts.

10/03/2026

The “one-rollover-per-year” rule limits retirement account holders to one indirect IRA-to-IRA rollover within a 12-month period. “Indirect” means you withdraw funds from one IRA and deposit them yourself in the same or another IRA within 60 days. If you attempt a second indirect rollover during the one-year period, the portion not previously taxed will be treated as a taxable distribution. And if you’re under age 59½, a 10% penalty generally will apply (with exceptions). What’s more, a second rollover may be treated as an excess IRA contribution subject to a 6% annual tax. But the rollover rule doesn’t apply to rollovers from traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. Contact us for details.

New temporary IRS regs address auto enrollment and contributions to Section 530A (or Trump) accounts. On or around Oct. 1, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Dept. will automatically establish accounts for eligible children with Social Security numbers who don’t have one. Parents or guardians must still claim the account before making deposits or receiving employer contributions and request the $1,000 government-funded deposit if the child is eligible. Eligible donors can make qualified general contributions to approved classes and may contribute certain U.S. publicly traded stock. Rules apply to tax years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2026, and expire on Sept. 30, 2029. Contact us with questions.

If you’re responsible for collecting, accounting for or remitting federal taxes withheld from employee paychecks, beware of the trust fund recovery penalty (TFRP). As a responsible individual, you may be personally liable for a 100% penalty on income and employment taxes your business either fails to collect or fails to remit to the IRS. Your actions must be “willful,” meaning you’ve been, or should have been, aware of the responsibility and either intentionally disregarded the law or were indifferent to it. According to the IRS, no “evil intent or bad motive” is required. Call us at 708-864-4071 if you receive a letter from the IRS about the TFRP or for help with tax compliance.

Professional — and now college — athletes could face unexpected tax bills if they don’t plan carefully. Multistate taxation used to be an issue only for pros. Now that college players earn revenue from profit-sharing and endorsement deals, they may need to worry about the “jock tax,” which many states and cities impose on income earned by athletes playing road games. Also, athletes need to consider their state of domicile before they receive signing bonuses or other large payments. For example, those moving from low-tax to high-tax states may want to negotiate to receive payments before they move. For these (and other) reasons, all paid athletes should get professional tax advice.
