Michigan Treasury Update
Treasury Letters
It has come to our attention that some Treasury letters, including some recently reissued letters, are causing concern or confusion. To the best of our knowledge, these letters were not issued in error. Taxpayers may receive a “Reminder of Tax Due” letter and it is correct. Please urge your clients to follow the contact or instructions on the letter if they disagree with the determination.

The most up-to-date, thorough information is available to taxpayers via Michigan Treasury eServices eServices, and we urge taxpayers to check there for details related to their account. Many scenarios are also explained in detail at the Tax Year 2025 Solutions Tracker.

Treasury Letters and Explanations
Request for Information Letters
If Treasury does not receive a timely response to a Request for Information letter, we are not able to complete the return processing using filed information, which could result in a tax credit denial and/or a tax due situation.

Reminder of Tax Due Letters
There are various reasons a taxpayer may receive a "Reminder of Tax Due" letter. For example, if upon processing the return, it was determined that the taxpayer did not make or underpaid estimated payments, or the payment was late. Penalty and interest is applied.

Notice of Correction Letters
Any time Treasury adjusts a return, we must send this letter. The adjustment could be due to a value entered incorrectly or it could be to reduce/disallow a credit. There are appeals rights attached to the letter- if the taxpayer disagrees with the decision, they should follow the appeal process.

Refund Sent in Error Letters
This is sent if a taxpayer received a check or deposit in error.

Taxpayers who received these letters also received corrections in one of two methods:

A corrected letter that indicated updated financials
A modified letter that acknowledged the mistake but included no financials. The letter also informed them they would receive an additional “Reminder of Tax Due” letter if they still owed.

Notice of Adjustment Letters
Dear Valued Treasury Partner:

I am writing to provide an update regarding the 27,000 Notice of Adjustment letters that were issued in error in April. Our teams undertook immediate corrective action to resolve the matter and implement process improvements to prevent similar errors in the future.

To date, approximately 8,700 corrected letters have been issued. But to reduce confusion, we have adopted a more streamlined communication format. Taxpayers (the remaining 18,300) are now receiving a revised correction letter acknowledging the error, and those with an outstanding balance will receive an accompanying page reflecting their current amount due in a letter of inquiry titled “Reminder of Tax Due.” Some of the letters may display dates in the past because the underlying account adjustments were completed last month; these notices were intentionally held while we confirmed accuracy across the entire population of affected taxpayers.

This large-scale mailing effort will take several days to complete, as we work closely with our printing and mail services teams. Those seeking immediate account information or correspondence history can obtain real-time information through Michigan Treasury eServices at Michigan.gov/mitreasuryeservices.

An additional cohort of taxpayers received a refund check for their Form 2210 penalty. Here is how Treasury will proceed with those checks:

Uncashed checks that are returned will be canceled and the account corrected.
If a check has been cashed and repayment is submitted, those funds will be applied to restore the correct balance.
Taxpayers who cashed the check and took no further action will receive a reminder notice (letter of inquiry), followed by an intent to assess if the balance remains unpaid.

We appreciate your continued partnership and understanding as we resolve this matter. We take this issue seriously, have incorporated lessons learned, and sincerely apologize for any hardship or confusion this situation may have caused.

Michigan Tax Letters - if you get one, contact your preparer. From another professional:
The State of Michigan is out of their minds. Does anyone else have a ton of clients getting letters for amounts due that don't correspond to the tax returns?

Examples:
A) He is due a refund of $158 but got a bill for $117
B) She owed $126, it was debited on 3/10, the bill says she owes $468
C) She owes $185, has a debit scheduled for 4/10, the bill says she owes $185

The due date isn't even here yet and none of them have received any kind of letter about changes.

Also if you have a refund and haven't received it yet, they are backlogged on those too.
