State lawmakers are exploring solutions to rising home insurance costs as Texas homeowners face some of the nation's highest premiums. 🏡

The average annual premium jumped from less than $2,000 to more than $3,500 in six years, according to Texas Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford. During a recent House Insurance Committee hearing, experts discussed weather-proofing programs and grant initiatives that could help reduce claims and bring down costs for homeowners across the state.

The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed a USD 70,000 fee for international students seeking to work in the country after finishing their studies under the Optional Practical Training programme, a move that could affect Indian students planning higher education in America.

Under the proposal, educational institutions would have to pay USD 70,000 when a student joins OPT for the first time and USD 30,000 for each subsequent renewal. The proposal will be open for public comment for 60 days before it can be finalised, and it could also face legal challenges from higher education groups or business associations. |

Americans are still moving south but the destinations are changing. Between July 2024 and July 2025, North Carolina overtook Texas as the country’s top destination for domestic migration, gaining about 84,000 more residents from other states than it lost. Texas followed at +67,000, with South Carolina close behind at +66,600.

At the opposite end, the biggest net outflows were concentrated in some of the country’s largest states: California lost around 229,000 residents to other states, while New York lost roughly 138,000.

But there are signs that the post-pandemic migration boom is evolving. Texas and Florida are still gaining residents domestically, but at a much slower pace than a few years ago. Meanwhile, the Midwest recorded positive net domestic migration for the first time this decade, with states such as Ohio and Michigan reversing substantial earlier losses.

Overall, the map shows that the Sun Belt remains the main magnet for Americans moving between states , but the strongest gains are increasingly concentrated in the Carolinas and the broader Southeast rather than just Texas and Florida.

🧭 Many of the most expensive retirement mistakes happen in the years right before you retire.

Each of these five comes down to timing.

Where your savings sit decides how much control you have over your taxes. If everything is in a 401(k) or traditional IRA, every dollar you spend in early retirement is taxable income. A bridge of cash or taxable savings lets you live on money that's already been taxed while you convert to Roth at low rates.

Medicare looks back two years. The income on your tax return at 63 sets your premiums at 65, so a big sale or conversion that year can raise your Part B and Part D bills.

Waiting until 70 gets you the largest Social Security check, but you still have to cover the years until then. If that means big withdrawals during a market drop, the damage can outweigh the higher benefit.

The stretch between your last paycheck and your first required minimum distribution is often the lowest-tax period of your life. RMDs start at 73 or 75, depending on your birth year.

And a market drop hurts most right around your retirement date, when you've stopped adding money and started taking it out.

Which of these five is closest to where you are right now?
