The IRS rolled out a new penalty-relief system this summer (Automatic Exemption from Penalty) that replaces the old "First Time Abate" process, and the good news is you don't have to request it.

It just applies if you qualify. The catch: it looks at your filing and payment history for the last 3 years (or 12 quarters if you file quarterly), entity by entity. If you run more than one business or file in multiple states, it's worth double-checking each one is actually in the clear.

Questions about how this applies to your setup? Just ask.

Manufacturers: rising material costs from tariffs aren't just a margin problem.

They might be a tax-planning opportunity too. Switching how you account for inventory (it's called LIFO, where the newest, priciest stock counts as sold first) can lower your taxable income when costs are climbing.

It's not for everyone, and it comes with real tradeoffs on your financial statements, but if tariffs are hitting your cost of goods, it's worth a conversation.

We geek out on this stuff, happy to walk through whether it fits your business.

Heads up if your business touches anything from Canada: since September 29, the U.S. isn't just taxing certain Canadian imports, it's banning them outright.

Packaged alcohol, dairy, and some motor-vehicle goods are on the list, part of a bigger trade escalation that's been building for months.

If you're a manufacturer or contractor sourcing materials or equipment from north of the border, this is worth checking against your supplier list now, not after a shipment gets held up.

Send us a message if you want a second set of eyes on it.

Quick one for our real estate investor clients: 100% bonus depreciation is permanent now, not phasing out like it used to be heading into this year.

If you've bought or built property recently, a cost segregation study can turn a big chunk of that cost into a deduction this year instead of spreading it over 30 years.

The catch: studies take time, and the fourth quarter is when the calendar starts working against you. If a property you own hasn't had one done, now's a good time to ask whether it should. Happy to point you in the right direction.

Sunday thought for real estate folks: buy existing or build new, which one actually wins on taxes right now?

Short answer: it depends on your timeline. Existing properties can deliver deductions almost immediately with a cost segregation study. New builds pay off bigger, but later.

If you're weighing your next move, this is a great one to talk through before you sign anything. Send us a message, we like this kind of puzzle.

Now that Q3 taxes are behind us... quick question for the business owners out there: was that payment based on how your year is actually going, or on last year's number with a little extra tacked on?

If it's the second one, you're not alone, it's how most estimated payments get made. But there's still a full quarter before year-end to get a real read on where things stand, especially if this year looked different from last year in any real way (new contracts, a new property, a new entity). Worth a coffee chat before Q4 planning season kicks off.

International business owners: GILTI has a new name, NCTI and it's not just a rebrand.

The rate is going up (10.5% to 12.6%), and a key exemption that protected capital-heavy operations just disappeared.

The good news: more of your foreign taxes now count against what you owe here. If you've got a foreign parent company or own operations overseas, this is worth a real conversation before year-end. We're happy to walk through what changed.

Big news for real estate investors: Opportunity Zones are now a permanent part of the tax code (no more "sunset date" hanging over the decision).

Pair that with a cost segregation study and 100% bonus depreciation, and you're looking at some serious first-year deductions on the right property.

If you've got gains sitting from a past sale or refinance, this combo is worth exploring. Drop us a message and we'll walk through the numbers with you.

Manufacturers: if you're building or expanding a facility, there's a new 100% deduction for the production side of the building (floors, processing rooms, equipment pads) but NOT the office or warehouse side.

The IRS just clarified the rules (Notice 2026-16), and the split between "production space" and "everything else" is where the real tax savings live. If a build or expansion is on your 2026 roadmap, this is worth mapping out early. Send us a message if you want to talk through it.

Building something big this year?

New IRS guidance (Notice 2026-11) spells out exactly when a construction project "begins" for bonus depreciation purposes and it's not always the date you'd guess.

Pouring the foundation counts. Signing the contract doesn't. If you've got jobs that started before vs. after January 2025, the tax treatment can be totally different.

Worth a quick look before your CPA files your return. Questions? We love this stuff, ask away.
