Starting a business? Here's something worth knowing before you form an LLC. 💡 The IRS taxes a single-member LLC the same way it taxes a sole proprietor, so forming one doesn't come with built-in tax savings. The real value of a single-member LLC is legal, not financial. By contrast, a multi-member LLC is taxed as a partnership by default and files its own partnership return, Form 1065.
LLC is also short for Limited Liability Company, a separate entity under state law that can help protect your personal assets from business debts and lawsuits. One thing people often miss is that the "C" doesn't stand for "Corporation." It stands for "Company." Most states also require LLCs to file annual reports and stay compliant. It's a good thing to understand before opening your own business.
