Some of the most valuable TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES aren't always the most obvious.
Here are two worth discussing with your DENTAL CPA:
🏡 THE AUGUSTA RULE
Under the right circumstances, you may be able to rent your personal residence to your practice for fewer than 15 days during the year without including that rental income in your gross income. The business side must still meet the requirements for a legitimate deductible business expense—including appropriate documentation and reasonable rental terms.
🏢 COST SEGREGATION
If you own your dental office building, a cost segregation study may identify portions of the property that qualify for shorter depreciation recovery periods rather than depreciating everything together as long-lived real property. That can potentially accelerate depreciation deductions. The IRS specifically recognizes cost segregation studies as a method used to classify property for federal depreciation purposes.
The important word here is strategy.
These aren't deductions to implement based on a social media video. Your circumstances, documentation, business purpose, property and tax situation all matter.

📅 Tax Deadline Reminder: October 15, 2026
If you requested an extension for your 2025 individual federal income tax return, October 15 is generally the deadline to file. IRS
One important reminder: an extension gave you additional time to file, not additional time to pay. For most taxpayers, any 2025 federal income tax owed was still due April 15, 2026. IRS
And while deadlines matter, your relationship with your CPA should extend far beyond filing dates.
At Pro-Fi 20/20 Dental CPAs, we work exclusively with dental practice owners to provide proactive tax planning, managerial accounting, cash flow management, advisory services, business valuations, and more.

The best EXIT STRATEGY is one you have time to build. 🦷📈
Starting early gives DENTAL PRACTICE OWNERS time to strengthen the areas future buyers may care about, evaluate tax-efficient structures well before a sale, and build a leadership team that can keep the practice performing even as the owner begins to step back.
But perhaps the biggest advantage is choice.
When you've prepared well in advance, you're in a better position to decide when and how you want to exit—rather than making those decisions because you're burned out or feel like you're out of options.

You don't have to be planning your exit to start building a DENTAL PRACTICE that's ready for one.
The same things that can make your practice more valuable to a future buyer—strong systems, the right people, healthy profits, and a business that doesn't depend entirely on you—can also make ownership better for you today. 🦷📈
Exit planning isn't about quitting. It's about creating options.
Whether you sell in 2 years or 20, building with the future in mind can give you more freedom to decide when, how, and why you eventually sell.

Most dentists don't seriously think about selling their DENTAL PRACTICE until retirement is only a few years away.
But building a valuable, sellable practice starts long before you're ready to sell. 🦷📈
The decisions you're making today—from profitability and overhead to growth, systems, and financial planning—can ultimately influence your practice's future value and your options when it's time to exit.
You don't need to be ready to sell to start preparing for it.
In fact, that's the point.

Your TAX BASIS isn’t just an accounting number your CPA tracks behind the scenes. It can influence real financial decisions throughout the life of your DENTAL PRACTICE.
💰 Cash flow and distributions
📉 Available tax deductions
⚠️ Potential tax exposure
📈 Long-term planning
🤝 Your eventual exit strategy
That’s why tax basis shouldn’t be something you discover at tax time—or when you’re preparing to sell.
Dental practice owners should understand where their basis stands and discuss it proactively with their tax advisor as financial decisions are being made.

Smart Year-End Tax Strategies for Dental Practice Owners
https://youtu.be/8GAT-5Sv2Xw

A strong year for your DENTAL PRACTICE can create opportunities—but some tax strategies require planning before year-end.
A few strategies worth discussing with your DENTAL CPA:
🏢 Cost Segregation — If you own your dental office building, a cost segregation study may identify building components that qualify for shorter depreciation periods, potentially accelerating deductions.
👨‍👩‍👧 Employing Your Children — Children who perform legitimate, age-appropriate work for the practice may be paid reasonable wages. Depending on your circumstances and entity structure, this can create tax-planning opportunities for the business and your family.
📈 Retirement Planning — A 401(k), profit-sharing plan, or potentially a defined benefit plan may provide opportunities to increase retirement contributions while creating valuable tax deductions.
The important part? Don’t wait until the last minute. Your CPA needs time to determine which strategies fit your specific situation—and to properly put them into action.

🦷 Sold it? Donated it? Threw it away?
If old dental equipment is still sitting on your FIXED ASSET LIST, it could still be included when your BUSINESS PROPERTY TAX is calculated—even if the equipment itself is long gone.
Business property is generally reported to the local taxing authority, which determines an assessed value based on applicable depreciation schedules. That makes keeping your fixed asset records current especially important.
Michelle Lanier, Director of Tax at Pro-Fi 20/20 Dental CPAs, explains why an annual fixed asset review can help make sure you’re not reporting property your practice no longer owns.

🦷 Your dental equipment doesn’t just affect your practice—it can also affect your BUSINESS PROPERTY TAXES.
Dental chairs, X-ray machines, office computers, waiting room furniture and other tangible personal property used by your practice may be included when business property taxes are assessed.
That’s why reviewing your FIXED ASSETS every year matters. Knowing what your practice owns—and keeping those records current—is an important part of maintaining an accurate financial picture.
Michelle Lanier, Director of Tax at Pro-Fi 20/20 Dental CPAs, breaks down what dental practice owners should know.
