The tax code lets you write off a business car that's going up in value.

Read that again. Depreciation is supposed to compensate you for an asset wearing out. But a 1972 GTO gets the exact same write-off schedule as a 2026 Lexus, same annual caps, same treatment for new and used. One of them is worth 40 percent of sticker in five years. The other should sell for more than you paid.

The IRS hated this. It lost in court to musicians writing off 300-year-old violins, announced it would take the issue to the Supreme Court, and then spent thirty years never finding a case to bring.

President Trump proposed giving American adults a $5,000 dividend.

I understand the idea behind it. If the government creates savings or additional revenue, there is nothing wrong with asking how some of that prosperity can benefit Americans directly.

But I think there may be a better question to ask:

What if we used that $5,000 to help more Americans become owners?

A universal program could cost more than $1 trillion. At a time when the United States already carries substantial debt and long-term obligations, that deserves serious consideration.

There is also inflation. Putting that much additional spendable cash into the economy could create additional inflationary pressure, potentially affecting interest rates and borrowing costs.

So I would consider a different approach.

Target the benefit toward Americans with lower incomes and fewer financial assets.

Then, instead of providing $5,000 of immediately spendable cash, put it into a long-term, tax-advantaged investment account.

Let that money participate in the growth of American businesses. Let it compound. Let it help build retirement security.

There may even be an opportunity for private companies and philanthropists to contribute voluntarily alongside the government.

I spend a lot of time thinking about the K-shaped economy.

Americans who own businesses, stocks and other appreciating assets have benefited enormously from economic growth and rising markets.

Many Americans have participated much less.

A one-time check may help someone today.

Ownership has the potential to help someone for decades.

Maybe the bigger opportunity is not simply giving more Americans $5,000.

Maybe it is giving more Americans a meaningful stake in the prosperity of the country they live in.

This Labor Day, we celebrate the people whose dedication, skill, and perseverance keep our businesses, communities and country moving forward.

From early mornings to late nights, from behind the scenes to front and center, meaningful work takes commitment—and every contribution matters.

Today is a reminder to appreciate the people who build, serve, create, care, lead, and inspire.

May we honor not only the work people do, but also their right to dignity, opportunity, balance, and time to enjoy the lives they work so hard to build.

Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and meaningful Labor Day.

Most small businesses assume inventory costs are only deductible in the year of sale. Since 2018, that rule has not applied to most of them.

If your gross receipts fall below $32 million for 2026, you may qualify to expense inventory costs under one of three alternative methods, and access the cash method of accounting. The right method depends on how your books are structured and whether you carry an applicable financial statement.

For businesses that qualify, a Form 3115 filing grants automatic IRS consent to change methods, and a Section 481(a) adjustment allows prior years' unsold inventory to be deducted in a single year.

Swipe to see which method applies to your business.

When Graham Rowan asked Neil Jesani, CFP® “From the outside, it seems like New York and California are a nightmare when it comes to taxes, but Florida or Texas might be a dream by comparison. Is that a fair assumption?”

Neil didn’t just confirm the obvious; he shared a bigger perspective.

Yes, we’ve seen significant migration from high-tax states to lower-tax ones like Florida and Texas. But Neil also shared a story of a client who moved to Puerto Rico chasing tax breaks… and ended up deeply unhappy.

At the end of the day, taxes shouldn’t force you to uproot your life or compromise your well-being.

Sometimes, it’s worth paying a bit more to live where you’re happiest, and when you work with a firm that truly understands strategic tax planning, you may not have to choose between comfort and tax savings.

If you’re earning $2 million or more and want to see what’s possible without leaving the place you call home, visit our website and book a call.

If your firm would have reimbursed it, you can't deduct it. Even if you never asked.
Client meals, mileage, home office — whether they're deductible comes down to one line in your partnership agreement. Get it right, and you deduct twice: Schedule E and Schedule SE. Most partners miss the second one.

Swipe through, then go read your agreement.

The Health Savings Account (HSA) is the only account in the US tax code that is triple tax-advantaged. Contributions are deductible, growth is tax-free, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free.

Most high earners use it to cover medical expenses. The smarter move is to invest it, leave it untouched, and let it compound as a long-term wealth building vehicle.

Are you using your HSA to its full potential?
