Making the World a Better Place

Many people are called to form for-profit and not-for-profit organizations to fulfill their personal destiny and often times lack the expertise to manage the administrative, financial and government compliance aspects of their business. In fact, over 80% of all small businesses fail due to inadequate financial management. DWG is a firm designed to help bridge that gap in order to help others to achieve their dreams.

One week to go: October 15 is the extended filing deadline.

If you filed an extension in April, here's who needs to act by Thursday, October 15:
🔹 Individuals who extended their 2025 return (Form 4868)
🔹 Calendar-year C corporations that extended Form 1120

One important reminder: an extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you owe tax, interest has been accruing on the unpaid balance since April, so the sooner your return is finished, the better.

DWG Clients: If your return isn't complete yet, please upload any remaining documents to your client portal today so our team has time to finish, review, and file.

Not a DWG client and still need help? Call us at (281) 201-8348.

Note: Taxpayers in IRS-declared disaster areas may have different deadlines.

"People often assume accounting is all about numbers. But after more than 30 years in this profession, I've learned it's really about people."

When Darrell Groves founded DWG CPA in 2005, his goal wasn't to build the biggest firm. It was to build one that clients could trust when they faced important financial decisions.

This month, we're sharing Darrell's story in four short parts: why he started DWG, what clients are really looking for, a client story that stayed with him, and the team behind it all.

Here's Part 1. Part 2 comes next Wednesday.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and here's something many business owners overlook:

Cyber risk isn't just an IT problem. It's a financial one.

The most common attacks on small businesses are designed to move money:
🔹 Fake or altered invoices that look legitimate
🔹 "Updated" vendor bank details sent by email
🔹 Requests to change an employee's direct deposit
🔹 Stolen logins to banking or accounting systems

Antivirus software won't stop most of these. Strong financial controls will: verifying changes, requiring a second approval, and limiting who can move money.

That's why we treat cybersecurity as part of financial control at DWG. It's also why we exchange documents through a secure client portal instead of email attachments.

All month, our team, led by a Certified Fraud Examiner, will share the scams we see most often and the simple controls that stop them. Follow along.

“Above budget” or “below budget” is only the beginning of the conversation.

If revenue beat the plan but profit missed it, something changed underneath the top line.
Pricing, labor, vendor costs, overhead, or collections may all play a part.

Understanding the reason behind the variance gives you something much more useful than a report: a direction for Q4.

DWG CPA helps business owners move from what happened to what needs to happen next.

Higher revenue does not automatically mean a stronger quarter.

Before Q3 closes, look underneath the sales number.
✔️Did margins improve?
✔️Did expenses rise faster than revenue?
✔️Are customers paying on time?
✔️Did cash reserves strengthen?
✔️Has your tax position changed?

The goal is not just to know whether the business grew. It is to understand what that growth actually produced.

Know the Q3 story before you build the Q4 plan.

A full schedule can make a healthcare practice look financially strong.

But volume and available cash are not the same thing.
When reimbursement arrives weeks after services are provided, the practice still has to cover payroll, rent, supplies, and everyday operating expenses in the meantime.

That is why visibility into receivables and payer timing matters.

You should know not only what you earned, but when the cash is expected to arrive.

A reliable financial process should survive vacations, illness, turnover, and growth.

That does not mean giving everyone access to everything.

It means documenting critical tasks, creating appropriate backups, and making responsibilities clear before there is an emergency.

Your team should know the process without relying on one person to carry it.

DWG CPA helps businesses build financial systems with both accountability and continuity in mind.

Growth usually costs money before it creates results. But every added expense should have a reason behind it.

✔️A new hire should improve capacity
✔️New software should save time or improve visibility
✔️Marketing should support revenue
✔️Equipment should increase efficiency or output

If costs keep rising without a clear return, growth can start working against the business.
Before Q4, ask what your recent investments are actually producing.

DWG CPA helps owners connect spending with financial performance.

A loan approval answers one question: Will the lender give you the money?

It does not fully answer another: Will taking the loan strengthen your business?

Before borrowing, look at the monthly debt payment, existing obligations, available cash cushion, expected return, and what happens if growth takes longer than planned.

The goal isn’t simply to qualify for financing. It’s to make sure the financing works for the business.
