Another case of fraud and misuse of funds in a nonprofit crossed my desk last month—and some people won't like hearing this.
Protecting donor dollars isn't complicated, but it does require diligence. Here are three important ways nonprofits can help prevent the improper use of contributions:
1️⃣ Board members—especially the President and Treasurer—should review bank statements and canceled checks every month.
2️⃣ Financial statements should be reviewed by the full board at regular meetings, and any discrepancies should be addressed promptly.
3️⃣ Donors should review Form 990 filings and available financial statements before making contributions and shouldn't hesitate to ask questions of the board and leadership.
I personally donate as much as I can to causes that help others, and I want to know that my contributions are being used as intended. I'm sure most donors feel the same way.
Transparency, accountability, and oversight matter. Let's all do our part to ensure charitable dollars are truly supporting the missions they were intended to serve
