โฐ 3 Days to Tax Day
Before we or your tax preparer can eโfile your tax return, we must receive the signed Form 8879 โ the IRS eโfile Signature Authorization. ๐
โ
If your return is finished, Form 8879 allows us to file it
โณ If your return is not ready, an extension must still be filed
โ Extensions do not happen automatically and still require authorization
If you do nothing:
โNo signed 8879 = no filing
โNo return + no extension = penalties and interest may apply
๐ฉ Please review, sign, and return Form 8879 as soon as you receive it.

: Representation vs. Information Access
IRS Form 2848 โ Power of Attorney โ
Full authority to act for you with the IRS
With Form 2848, an Enrolled Agent (EA) can:
๐ Speak directly to the IRS on your behalf
โ๏ธ Receive and respond to IRS notices
๐ค Negotiate payment plans, penalties, or settlements
โ๏ธ Represent you in audits, appeals, and collections
โ๏ธ Sign certain IRS documents (for approved matters)
๐ Best choice if you want the EA to handle the IRS for you for specific tax years and issues.
On to IRS Form 8821 โ Tax Information Authorization๐
Access only โ no representation
With Form 8821, an EA can:
๐ Access IRS transcripts and account records
โ๏ธ Receive copies of IRS notices
๐The EA cannot:
โ Speak to the IRS for you
โ Negotiate or resolve issues
โ Take action or make agreements
๐ Best choice if you only want information reviewed, not IRS representation.
Quick Takeaway
โ
Form 2848 = Representation + authority
๐ Form 8821 = Information access only
