Three dates on next year's calendar that get decided this year.

January 15 is the last estimated tax payment for 2026. If you're going to be short, it's much nicer to find out in November than the week it's due.

The end of January is W-2s for every employee and 1099s for every contractor. The forms themselves are easy. Having the right addresses, the signed W-9s, and clean payroll records behind them is the October job.

March 15 is S-corp and partnership returns. Businesses that close their books in January sail through that one. The ones that close in March end up filing an extension.

None of these are surprises. They're just early. The fourth quarter is where the first quarter gets easy. 330-686-6666

From Beth 💙

October is National Women's Small Business Month, and I want to say something to the women I work with.

You started the salon, the clinic, the cleaning company, the consulting practice. You did it with a kid on your hip or a second job running in the background, and you're still here.

I've been in accounting for more than 25 years, and my favorite part of the job is sitting across from an owner who built something real and showing her what it's actually worth. The profit she didn't know she had. The tax bill she can still change. The hire she can afford.

If you're a woman running a business around here and nobody has shown you your numbers lately, come see me. I'd be honored.

Happy Boss's Day! Especially to the owners out there who don't have one.

No one to approve your vacation, sign off on the big purchase, or tell you the numbers look okay. You're the boss of sales, hiring, payroll, and taking out the trash.

The catch with having no boss is there's nobody checking your work, either. For a lot of owners, the closest thing is their accountant. Somebody who looks at the numbers with you, says the uncomfortable thing out loud, and asks what you're planning before you do it.

If you don't have that person yet, we'd be glad to interview for the job. 330-686-6666

Tomorrow is October 15, the last day for extended personal and C-corp returns. There's no extension after this one.

If yours is in, enjoy a quiet Thursday. If it's not, call us today, not tomorrow afternoon. And remember that the extension only bought time to file, not time to pay, so interest has been building on any balance since April.

Once it's done, here's the bigger fix. If you extended because the records weren't ready, this is the quarter to change that. Next October should just be another Thursday. 330-686-6666

Quick heads-up before the weekend: Monday, October 12 is a Federal Reserve holiday.

That means the system banks use to move direct deposits takes the day off. If your payday is Monday and the payroll hasn't been sent yet, it may not land until Tuesday. Paydays early next week can be affected too, depending on when your payroll processes.

It's a small calendar trap. Free if you know about it, expensive in awkward conversations if you don't.

If you run your own payroll, check your deadline today. If we run it, you're covered. 330-686-6666

Saturday is World Mental Health Day. We're accountants, not counselors, but we see the money side of this every single week.

The owners who lose sleep over money usually aren't the ones with the worst numbers. They're the ones who don't know their numbers. The envelope that hasn't been opened. The tax bill they've been guessing at since spring. The payroll account that's "probably fine."

Not knowing is its own kind of stress, and more sales don't fix it. Seeing the real number does. Sometimes it's better than you feared. Sometimes it's worse, and now there's a plan. Either way, you sleep.

If you've been carrying a guess around, let's trade it for a number. 330-686-6666

It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so here's a public service announcement from your accountant.

The IRS will not text you. It won't message you on Facebook. It won't email you out of nowhere, and it will never tell you to pay by gift card before 5 o'clock.

The IRS says it plainly on its own site: the first contact is normally a letter in the mail. If a message is unexpected, rushes you, threatens you, or asks for account information, it's a scam.

The scammers get busy this time of year because everyone's tired. If you get one of those messages, don't answer it. Forward it to us and we'll tell you if it's real. 330-686-6666

And just like that, it's the fourth quarter. Eighty-seven days left in 2026.

Those days have one job: making sure the year you actually had shows up correctly on the return you file in the spring. Bank accounts reconciled, expenses in the right buckets, owner pay recorded the way it really happened, and an honest look at what April is going to cost.

None of that takes a wizard. It takes bookkeeping done before December instead of during it.

If the books are behind, no judgment. Just tell us this week. 330-686-6666

Setting Up the Best QuickBooks for Small Business Success - Elevated Tax & Accounting https://monkeylink.co/248dd8

Most small business owners connect a bank account to QuickBooks and expect the software to take it from there. It won’t. QuickBooks only knows what you tell it, and a rushed setup early in the year usually shows up later as a messy tax return. With year-end close coming, now is a good time to […...

And that's the third quarter. Ninety-two days left in 2026.

Plenty of time to fund a retirement plan, fix the estimates, clean up the books,
decide on bonuses, collect the W-9s, and head into January already knowing
your number.

Also plenty of time to do none of it.

If you get to the bottom of that list and realize nobody's been helping you
with any of it, that's a conversation for October, not April. We're here.
