Your bank balance doesn't tell you the whole story. πŸ’‘

Wade Carpenter, CPA and author of Profit First for Contractors, explains why that big number in your account can actually work against you β€” unless you know what each dollar is earmarked for.

Payroll. Job costs. Overhead. Profit. Growth.

When cash doesn't have a designated purpose, it gets spent on the wrong things, and financial chaos follows.

The fix is simpler than you think: give every dollar a job. Move money into purpose-specific accounts so you always know what's available and what's already committed.

Even large contractors who considered themselves 'too sophisticated' for this kind of system have changed their tune after seeing it in action.

Clarity isn't a luxury. It's a competitive advantage. πŸ—οΈ

Can't see what's really wrong in your construction business? You might be too close to it.

When you can't see the forest through the trees, bring in a drone: someone outside your daily operations who can spot what you're missing. That drone could be your CPA or your bond agent.

Too many contractors avoid these conversations the same way people avoid going to the doctor. Nobody wants bad news. But ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away, it just lets it grow.

Your advisors are paid to give you good advice. Make sure you've got the right ones, and make sure you're actually listening.

You'd never show up to a concrete pour without a plan. So why are so many contractors running their business without one?

The same discipline you bring to the job site needs to show up in how you plan your business.

Our advice? Don't start with big goals. Start with an honest question: what do I NOT want to repeat next year?
β†’ A job that went bad β€” why?
β†’ The wrong type of contracts?
β†’ Clients that drained your team?

Work backwards from what didn't work, and you'll have a much clearer path forward.

Contractors: January 1st isn't going to fix your business. πŸ“…

Sometimes we think waiting until the last minute to plan, making rushed resolutions, and hoping the new year magically brings new results.

It doesn't.

"January 1 is just a day on the calendar. It's not your business strategy. Just because you flip the calendar over doesn't mean that your business magically flips."

The contractors who grow their business year over year aren't winging it on New Year's Eve. They're planning now β€” with clear goals, real numbers, and a strategy that actually holds up past the second week of January.

Don't wait. Your 2027 starts today. πŸ’ͺ

🚨 Contractors, this one's for you.

Every year it's the same story: big promises on December 31st, same old habits by February.

'I'll figure out which jobs are profitable.'
'I'll pay myself what I'm worth.'
'I'll finally get my books in order.'

We call it the December 31 Trap, and it's costing contractors real money, year after year.

Here's the truth: the contractors who win in 2025 aren't making better resolutions. They're making Q4 decisions RIGHT NOW. πŸ’ͺ

Billing caught up βœ…
Books you can plan from βœ…
A clear path for your cash flow βœ…

That's not a New Year's wish. That's built in Q4.

Don't wait for the ball to drop. The time to start is now. 🎯

Still chasing W-9s and insurance certificates every January? There's a smarter way to handle vendor compliance β€” and it starts long before tax season hits.

In this clip, Wade shares how automated vendor compliance tracking works in practice:

πŸ“‹ Vendors self-register and submit W-9 info before they ever get on your payroll
πŸ“„ Certificates of insurance are automatically uploaded and checked for compliance
πŸ’° Payments are held until every required document is on file β€” giving you built-in leverage

The result? No more last-minute scrambles, no missing 1099 documentation, and no more playing phone tag with subs in late January.

As Wade puts it: "The best way to get somebody to comply is they wanna get paid. You say, 'We gotta have a W-9 or that certificate of insurance before you get a dime.'"

Build the system once, and let it enforce compliance for you all year long.

Self-performing contractors: your time tracking tool might be creating a blind spot in your job costing β€” and costing you more than you realize.

When labor is your biggest job cost, disconnected systems (think: ClockShark, Clockify, ADP, Paychex) that don't feed directly into your job costing platform leave you without real-time data when you need it most.

Wade explains why integration isn't optional for contractors who want accurate, real-time job costing β€” and what these data gaps are really costing your business.

There's a receipt in your field supervisor's truck visor right now that your accounting team will never see.

Wade nails it in this clip: the fix isn't complicated. Get your supers snapping a quick photo of every receipt in the field, have it categorized in seconds, and your whole accounting operation runs better β€” with real-time numbers instead of end-of-month chaos.

5 seconds in the field saves hours in the office. That's the system.

A $75,000 bill. Out of nowhere. Sound familiar?

Here's the breakdown of how it happens: A project manager receives an invoice β†’ it sits in their inbox β†’ it never reaches accounting β†’ the owner gets blindsided by a massive unexpected cost.

This is one of the most common, and most costly, gaps in construction financial management. And the fix is simpler than most people realize.

A centralized approval workflow closes this gap immediately, ensuring every invoice has a clear, trackable path from the field to the books. No surprises, no lost paperwork, no financial blindsides.

Most contractors find out how a job went weeks after it's over. By then, it's too late to do anything about it.

Wade Carpenter built something to fix that.

It's called CONMOS β€” the Construction Multiplier Operating System. It's an all-in-one financial dashboard that gives contractors real-time visibility into their numbers, right from their phone.

One system. One place. No more waiting.

Right now it's only available to Carpenter CPA clients β€” but the concept is simple: contractors deserve to know where they stand today, not next month.

Tune in to hear more about how CONMOS is changing the way contractors manage their finances: https://youtu.be/Fypw5yxgNfM
