Charities fear tax bill could turn philanthropy into a pursuit only for the rich 12/24/2017

I would like to think that this isn't true. Have we degraded so much as a society that charitable giving is only done to get tax deductions? Yes, I readily admit that there are too many people out there who think that way. On the other hand, doesn't giving out of a sense of benevolence and generosity trump any tax deduction? (Reminder: The Bible clearly instructs us that way.) Furthermore, since the new law will put more disposable income into people's pockets, there should be additional opportunities for charitable giving, since the government will be pulling a smaller share of taxes out of nearly everyone's paychecks.

Charities fear tax bill could turn philanthropy into a pursuit only for the rich A drop in those who qualify for the charitable tax deduction could cut into middle-class giving.

Pardon the raspy voice...maybe I'm coming down with the annual cold.

I had a chance to review the new tax law and my initial comments are outlined in the video. There is LOTS to discuss, and I'm sure that more little nuggets will be discovered along the way, once people have had a chance to actually read all 500 pages of the new law.

For now, some things are very clear, and taxpayers have some chores to do for the last week of 2017.

I'm surprised. We have a new tax bill. I didn't think Congress could do it.

It will take a few days to digest it, and I'll post commentary on what it means for you after I have some time to give it a thorough read.

Meanwhile, it's very clear what people now need to do in the 10 days we have left in 2017 to minimize this year's taxes. That's the subject of the video.

I'm now video-enabled! Even though I have a face for radio and a voice for print, video is the wave of the future.

In this first installment, I talk about the new IRS mileage rates and discuss some good and bad elements of the proposed tax bill. Will it pass? I'm not so sure.

IRS just announced new mileage rates for 2018:

Business mileage deduction goes to 54.5 cents per mile, up from 53.5 cents.

Medical and moving expense mileage will be 18 cents/mile, up from 17 cents.

Charitable mileage deduction remains at 14 cents per mile.

These rates go into effect on January 1, 2018.
