Good food, great people, and even better conversations! 🍻

Carla Marsh and Megan Fedolak had a blast at today’s Business Mixer with Macomb Networking Group!

It’s always a treat to meet fellow business owners face to face and swap stories about what keeps our local businesses thriving.

So great connecting with Rick Moeller (Virtual Solutions Group), David Barron (B&B Merchant Services) and our wonderful client Mitchell Groters (Advertising and Graphics) 💙

Big thanks to MNG for bringing everyone together. If we met today, we’re so glad we did!

🐧Fun Fact Friday!🐧
Erect-crested penguins, found on the Bounty and Antipodes Islands of New Zealand, have a unique superpower among penguins: they can raise and lower their bright yellow crests at will. It's one of the few penguin species that has voluntary control over a physical feature, and they use it to communicate mood, interest, and social signals to the rest of the colony.

Clear communication changes everything in a business. Whether it's a new policy, a payroll update, or a compliance change your team needs to know about, how you communicate it matters as much as the information itself. At APS, we help take the guesswork out of the HR and payroll conversations that small business owners dread the most.

🐧 Question of the Week 🐧

One of our employees has chicken pox. Is it okay to tell our other employees about this condition?

Answered by HR Pros: You can let employees know they may have been exposed to chicken pox, but avoid naming the affected employee. Limit the announcement to those who have a genuine need to know, such as employees who may have come into contact with them or those you know to be immunocompromised.

You're not required to let the employee return to work while contagious. If they say they're no longer contagious and want to return, you can require a doctor's note confirming that. Once you have it, you can decide how to move forward based on the doctor's recommendation.

🐧Fun Fact Friday!🐧 Magellanic penguins migrate up to 3,000 miles each year between their breeding grounds in South America and their feeding grounds in warmer waters. Every year, the same journey. Every year, they make it.

Running a business is its own kind of long journey. There are seasons of abundance and seasons of grinding it out, but you keep going. At APS, we've been making the journey alongside Michigan businesses for years, handling the payroll and HR details so business owners can focus on what's ahead, not what's weighing them down.

🐧 Question of the Week 🐧

Does the Family and Medical Leave Act apply to our organization?

Answered by HR Pros: You're subject to FMLA if you're a private sector employer that had 50 or more employees for at least 20 workweeks in the current or preceding calendar year.

When counting employees, include anyone whose name appeared on your payroll on any working day of a calendar week, whether or not they were paid for that week.

Once you meet that threshold, you stay covered unless you later drop below 50 employees for 20 workweeks in the current or preceding calendar year.

Public employers and local educational agencies, such as school boards and public or private elementary and secondary schools, are covered by FMLA regardless of employee count.

APS clients have access to more detailed FMLA information, including employee eligibility, on our platform.

Busted: final paycheck timing isn't as flexible as a lot of businesses think.

Here's the truth: in Michigan, final wages are due on the next regularly scheduled payday, regardless of how the employment ended. Other states have their own rules, and some require immediate payment for involuntary terminations. Missing that window can mean real penalties.

Bottom line: "whenever we get to it" isn't a final paycheck policy.

Does your offboarding process guarantee the final paycheck goes out on time?
