Your business shows a profit. But would it still be profitable if it paid you what your work is worth?

You pay your team. You pay your bills. But if your own pay isn’t fully accounted for, some of that “profit” may just be payment for your work.

That matters before you hire, lower your prices, or spend money you think the business has earned.

I’m Nick, The Fractional CFO. I help business owners build a profit model that includes fair pay for the work they do—so they can understand their true breakeven and what their business needs to produce.

Salary is not profit. Your business needs room for both.

More sales. More employees. More work. But are YOU making more money?

Before you set another revenue goal, ask what that revenue needs to do for you.

Pay you properly for your work. Produce profit after paying you. Cover your cash obligations. Help build a reserve so one delayed customer payment doesn’t turn into a crisis.

That’s why I work backward from those outcomes to determine what the business needs to sell—and what it can afford to spend on labor, marketing, and overhead.

If your “profit” is just paying you for doing your job, what are you earning for owning the business?

You work in the business. You also own it and take the risk.

Your work deserves pay. Then you need to understand what profit remains.

Ask yourself: If I paid someone else to do my work, how much profit would be left?

Salary is not profit.

Here’s how a million-dollar business goes from 12% profit to just 3%—without losing a single customer.

The difference? Counting what the owner’s work is actually worth.

You pay your team. You pay your bills. But if you’re doing work the business isn’t fully paying you for, some of that “profit” may be unpaid work.

That matters when you want to hire help, take home more money, or grow.

Before you decide what your business can afford, ask: What profit would remain if I paid someone else to do my jobs?

Starting a business—or planning your exit?

Understanding what drives business value matters long before you decide to sell.

An industry multiple is only part of the equation. Your earnings, business size, and the quality of your financial records matter, too.

And if your profit only looks good because you’re underpaying yourself, that’s something to address now.

As your fractional CFO, I help you understand your numbers, plan for market-based owner pay, and work toward stronger profit and dependable cash.

The goal: a business that pays you today while you prepare for what comes next.

Your Numbers Made Easy

Your business might only look profitable because your P&L doesn’t reflect the full value of your work.

Consider this example:
• $1,000,000 in annual revenue.
• $120,000 in reported pretax profit.
• $30,000 of owner pay included in expenses.

If the owner’s work is worth $120,000, there’s $90,000 of compensation missing from the analysis.

Account for that gap, and the profit becomes $30,000.

That’s 3%, rather than the reported 12%.

The distinction matters when you’re setting prices, considering a hire, or deciding how much the business can afford to pay you.

Cash adds another layer.

Taking distributions reduces your business’s cash without reducing its P&L profit. Your cash plan needs to include everything you take out.

In this video, I explain how to value your roles, separate owner pay from profit, and connect those numbers to your household needs and business cash.

Your accountant says you're profitable. So why does it feel like you're working for free?

Here’s the test: If you paid someone else a market-rate salary to do your job, would your business still be profitable?

If your current numbers already include some owner pay, account for the difference.

What’s left after paying you properly is what matters.

A business that only makes a profit because you’re underpaid depends on you subsidizing it.

I'm Nick, The Fractional CFO. I install a profit model that puts your real wage in the numbers first, so you can see what it takes to pay yourself and turn a profit.
