Stay on top of your books with these few tips:

1. Watch for recurring charges
Subscriptions have a way of adding up. Review recurring expenses regularly and cancel anything your business no longer needs.

2. Don’t ignore small transactions
Those $10, $20, and $50 purchases add up. Make sure smaller business expenses are being tracked, too.

3. Review unpaid invoices
Making a sale doesn’t mean the money is in your account. Keep an eye on outstanding invoices and follow up on overdue payments.

4. Check your books before making big purchases
Before investing in new equipment, software, or services, take a look at your current cash flow and financial position.

5. Keep business records beyond tax season
Your financial records can help you spot trends, prepare for future expenses, and make better business decisions throughout the year.

I know that there are a lot of resources available for bookkeeping, but I want to keep you in the “know” for your small business.

Here are some tips you SHOULD know as a small business owner:

1. Keep business and personal expenses separate
A separate business bank account makes tracking expenses, reconciling accounts, and preparing for tax time much easier.

2. Keep your books up to date
Don’t wait until tax season to figure out what happened financially. Regular bookkeeping gives you a clearer picture of where your business stands.

3. Save your receipts
Keep documentation for your business expenses. Digital organization can make this much easier.

4. Know your numbers
Your revenue is only part of the story. Pay attention to expenses, profit, cash flow, and what your numbers are telling you.

5. Reconcile your accounts regularly
Make sure your bookkeeping records match your bank and credit card statements. Small discrepancies can become bigger problems when left unchecked.

A few weeks ago, our delivery van was involved in a serious accident while bringing milk and meat to our customers across Western New York. Morgan, one of our Erba Verde employees, was behind the wheel and thankfully walked away with only minor injuries. We are so grateful for that. Vans and product can be replaced. People can’t.

Still, the accident hit our small farm hard. We lost the entire delivery of milk and meat, and the van itself was totaled. Morgan will be out of work for about a month while she recovers, and because workers’ compensation doesn’t cover her full wages, she’s facing a real financial gap through no fault of her own.

Where your support would go:

Our goal is to raise $8,000. A portion of the funds will go directly to Morgan, to help cover the wages workers’ comp won’t while she heals. She has given so much to this farm and this is our chance to give a little back to her.

The rest will help us replace our delivery van sooner than insurance alone will allow. That van was only recently purchased and has is been one more the bridge between connecting our farm and to our community. The faster we can get back on the road, the faster we can get back to doing what we love: bringing fresh, quality milk and meat to the families and communities of WNY.

We want to be honest. Asking for help doesn’t come naturally to us. We’re used to being the ones who provide for those around us. Farming has always been a community effort, and we’ve been humbled time and again by the kindness of the people we serve. If you’re able to contribute, every dollar truly helps. And if you’re not, we completely understand. We kindly ask instead that you share this page, send a kind word, or simply continue to support local farms. It would mean just as much to us.

East Aurora has been named as one of two winners in the Northeast, alongside Montpelier, Vt., in PARADE Magazine’s America’s Favorite Small Towns competition and is officially a finalist for the national title.

Featured in PARADE’s latest issue, East Aurora is recognized for the history, charm, and experiences that make it such a special place to visit, including the Roycroft Campus, Vidler’s 5 & 10, the Aurora Theatre, and so much more.
