October 15th is the deadline for most taxpayers who filed an extension for their 2025 federal return.

Before that date, make sure you:

• Gather every W-2, 1099, 1099-K, 1095-A, retirement statement, and other income document that applies to you.

• Double-check dependent information, Social Security numbers, banking information, and any major life changes from the year.

• Get your self-employment income and exenses organized if you own a business or work for yourself.

• Review any IRS letters or notices you received so nothing important gets overlooked.

• Confirm that your extension was actually filed if you requested one.

• If you owe, pay as much as you can. An extension gave you more time to file — not more time to pay — so interest and possible penalties may have been accruing since April 15.

• Don’t wait until October 15th to start looking for missing paperwork. The IRS specifically encourages extension filers to file as soon as they are ready.

And remember: if you filed an extension, October 15th is your filing deadline — not the day to finally start getting everything together.
