A couple came in with their entire retirement account invested in stocks, riding Nvidia and every other AI stock to incredible returns. Then we asked one question: “Do you realize this portfolio could easily take a 50% haircut?”

In this clip from our podcast It’s All Money, the Sonoma Wealth Advisors team explains why retirement planning isn’t just about returns. It’s about understanding the makeup of your portfolio alongside your income: Social Security, pensions, and any other sources of retirement income.

Bonds are historically known to be the safe part of your portfolio, but over the past decade they've seemed anything but. Looking at rolling 10-year returns, U.S. bonds are now in their worst stretch in more than 200 years of data. The good news is that yields are a lot higher now, which may set up a very different decade ahead for bond investors.

This week Sonoma Wealth Managing Principal Chris Sipes CFP® and Marketing Director Dano Weir:

• A look at bonds’ lost decade, and how this stretch compares to every other decade going back to the 1930s.
• What higher bond yields today could mean for investors who rely on their portfolio for income.
• Stock valuations are close to their 1999 highs. What could the pattern of bonds be telling us about other asset classes?

Your 401(k) can run the same way. Automatic payroll contributions mean you're saving before the money ever hits your checking account. No willpower required.

👉When was the last time you checked your contribution rate?

Would you take $20 now or $40 in a week? Deciding when to claim Social Security can feel like the same test, with far more money on the line. Sonoma Wealth Managing Principal Daren Blonski CFP® and Marketing Director Dano Weir are joined on It's All Money by Certified National Social Security Advisor Clay Dunkle CFP® to unpack when claiming may make sense and when waiting might cost you.

In this episode:
• Why a shrinking trust fund isn't the same as Social Security disappearing.
• The go-go, slow-go and no-go years, and why they could matter for your claiming age.
• A hypothetical example comparing claiming at 62, 67 and 70.
• Three claiming mistakes Clay has seen leave money on the table.

The September jobs report came in well short of expectations, and stocks rose anyway. On The Markets this week looks at why a weaker payroll print pushed the odds of an October Fed hike lower, and why that still leaves mortgages above 7% and the 10-year near 5.2%.

This week Sonoma Wealth Managing Principals Daren Blonski CFP®, Chris Sipes CFP® and Marketing Director Dano Weir:

• Market was flat for the week? Don’t look under the hood...
• Worried about a divided house, senate and executive branch? How have markets performed historically during periods of divided government?

Our Managing Principal Daren Blonski was once again honored to support the La Luz Center Leadership Academy this month, continuing a partnership he holds close to his heart.

Founded in 1985, La Luz (“The Light”) began in Sonoma as a community center serving wine-industry workers and families from Latin America. Decades later, its reach has grown well beyond those roots. Today, the organization offers early childhood support, legal services, assistance with essentials such as food and housing, and education programs focused on long-term economic mobility.

The Leadership Academy sits at the center of that mission. The program is designed “to develop leadership skills and their social network so that they can be a catalyst for change in Sonoma Valley through health, education, and financial security.”

Drawing on his master’s degree in Organizational Development from Sonoma State University, Daren once again shared his experience with this year’s academy class and joined them in celebrating their accomplishments at the closing awards ceremony.

Daren, when asked why he donates his time to teach and give back:

“There’s something about teaching that flips a switch in me. When I’m mentoring students, I’m not thinking about markets or strategy. I’m fully present, listening, trying to meet each person where they are. That same part of my brain is what makes me a better leader back at the office and, honestly, a better father at home. Every time I show up for someone else’s growth, I get sharper at showing up for my own team and my own kids. In a roundabout way, the kids are actually helping me, I’m helping them, and it’s a great exchange. It’s a great day to be a part of.”

Our thanks to the dedicated La Luz team for another opportunity to support their work and serve Sonoma and the surrounding communities.
