Next Tuesday, Leonel and Matt are hosting a live webinar with Brian Navin, an investment specialist at T. Rowe Price. Brian will share how his team is viewing the global picture right now, from corporate earnings and interest rates to markets overseas.

If you are 73 or older, the IRS requires you to take a required minimum distribution from your traditional IRA or retirement plan every year, whether you need the money or not.

For a lot of people, that is a problem. The distribution gets added to your income, and depending on where you land, it can push you into a higher tax bracket or raise your Medicare premiums.

So what if you genuinely do not need the money? Matt walks through four real options below, from a Roth conversion to a strategy specifically for people who are still working, plus two lesser known moves involving charitable giving and annuities.

Worth a watch if this is a decision in front of you or someone in your family.

Introducing Leo & Matt's Money Adventures

As owners of Calderon Fortney Financial Group, we've spent our careers helping individuals and families build stronger financial futures. Along the way, we've become equally passionate about the importance of starting that education early.

That belief inspired Leonel to write Leo & Matt's Money Adventures. A fun and engaging way to introduce children ages 6 to 8 to some of the basic ideas about money that can help shape the choices they make for years to come. Through the adventures of two curious friends and a colorful cast of forest characters, young readers discover where money came from, how we earn it, why saving matters, and even what it means to turn a simple idea, like a lemonade stand, into a small business.

The lessons are simple: work has value, saving takes patience, goals matter, and the choices we make with money can create opportunities.

Leonel partnered with talented creative designer Gina Lincoln, who brought Leo, Matt, and their world to life through the characters and colorful illustrations she created.

But this project is about more than financial education. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to organizations supporting children's literacy and health, two causes that mean a great deal to us.

We're incredibly proud to share Leo & Matt's Money Adventures with our clients, friends, families, and community.

The book is now available on amazon, the link will be in the comments below.

If you know a child, parent, grandparent, teacher, school, or organization that might enjoy or benefit from it, we hope you'll pass it along and leave us a review.

Thank you for helping us share something we believe can make a difference, and perhaps start a few important conversations about money along the way.

Calderon Fortney spent last Wednesday at Wyantenuck Country Club supporting the Naugatuck Rotary Scholarship Fund. What a beautiful course.

Days like this are some of our favorites. Good people, a good cause, and a chance to give back to the community that has given us so much. The scholarship fund helps local students take their next step, and we are proud to play a small part in it.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Naugatuck.

If you have ever cared for a parent or loved one with dementia, you know the hardest moments are not always the medical ones. They are the days when the person in front of you does not seem like the person you have always known, and you are not sure how to respond.

This Thursday, ACAP South Central CT is hosting a free session on exactly that. Responding to Challenging Behaviors in Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias, led by Tracy Weiss of Right at Home. It is a practical, compassionate look at how to recognize common dementia-related behaviors and respond with more confidence and calm. Participants will also go through the Virtual Dementia Tour, a simulation that lets you experience what your loved one may be feeling.

We are glad to support this one. Caregivers give so much, and they deserve support of their own.

Free to attend, but registration is required.

About thirty years ago, three young people were just starting out in this business at a firm called Skandia, dialing the phones, making cold calls, and getting offered pizza and a keg to stick around and make a few more hours.

Two of them were our own Matt Fortney and our office mate Roy Johansen. The third was Michelle Page, who stopped by the office this week.

Back then they did not know much except that they wanted to work hard and figure it out. You learn a lot about people sitting beside them while you are all grinding through call after call, hoping someone picks up.

All these years later, they are all still in the industry and all still going strong. Michelle has built a wonderful career on the firm side, now a Senior Vice President at Osaic, while Matt and Roy went on to build their practices. Different paths from the same starting line.

Grateful for the friendships that come from starting out alongside good people. Great to see you, Michelle.

Meet IRMAA. She is not the relative you dodge at Thanksgiving, but she can be just as expensive.

If you are a higher earner heading toward Medicare, she is worth knowing about, especially the part about what quietly triggers her.
